Agar Pins

So I found a surprise today as I was cleaning up my room. Their was a jalisco agar plate that i had laying around for a while. I go to go clean it out and open up the top.

Now, I am the contamination master, I have been trying to get clean spawn for 6 months now and I just cannot do it successfully. My jars always contam.
So apparently, my only way i'll ever produce mushrooms, as little as they are, is by leaving agar dishes around for a few months lol.
Figured i'd share, agar pins always interested me.
edit: for some reason, even though the picture is uploaded, you can't enlarge it, it says I deleted it. I didn't and even uploaded it twice.

next time you get an agar pin open the plate in a SAB and put the whole pin right onto a new plate. should come out pretty damn clean, make 1 transfer to new plate and use that to inoc grains.

I went through a stage where my jars were all contaminating, had me confused for a long time as I never used to have a problem and I had no issue making clean agar plates.
It turned out the problem was when I replaced my cheap low pressure PC with a steam steriliser I wasn't venting it properly so my grain was never sterile in the first place.
Next time you do grain jars leave one unopened as a control to rule out unsterile grain.

I do use a Sterilizer too.
It builds up pressure though and holds it, I PC oats for 90min, and just turn it off and let the pressure release naturally.
What do you mean "venting"?

I didn't even see it until I opened it up over my sink to dump it.

When I make more plates, i'll let one sit and hopefully the same happens and I will definitely do that.

you need to let the air be pushed out and replaced by steam as it heats up.
mine has a small hole and once it starts boiling I let it blast steam out for 10 minutes before plugging it with a stick and letting the pressure climb.
also until you fix your problem try 2 hours from the moment you reach 15 psi.

Oh yes, I do vent the air for at least 10 minutes, usually until steam starts coming out.
I'll try two hours. I am definitely discouraged after all my failed attempts and am losing interest in the hobby because I just keep failing. I have learned a lot though. All my agar transfers come out clean, it's my grain that contams.
So maybe you are right, I'll PC for longer.

10 minutes AFTER steam starts coming out.
I'm pretty sure its overkill, if I'm in the room i just do 5 minutes or so as it's so noisy but until you have clean grainspawn don't take chances, use plenty of safety margin.
