Grow kit not growing?
    #23413079 - 07/05/16 09:17 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys,

i have to say a few things first :smile:First im new to this site/forum (Hello ), so i don't really know if im doing everything right, sorry for that. Second, english isn't my native language so im probably going to make some grammar mistakes. But i understand english "fluently" so don't worry commenting complicated stuff.

Also i have to say that i have little experience with growing mushrooms. I once had a grow kit, that went awesome. And i also started colonizing Rye-Jars. But I thought i messed it all up but still cased the substrate. After a few weeks one single little mushroom popped out and im doing everything right now to keep this little friend alive. But since i thought i messed up the substrate, i ordered a grow kit to save money on buying spore and then use the "Grow kit-Mushrooms" to make some spore prints.

And thats the problem right now. It's an XL-Grow kit with no perlite at the bottom. Which confused me since i thought only 100% mycelium grow kits are missing the perlite.
I let the grow kit soak with water for about 12 hours, as instructed, and then placed it inside a grow box (Big plastic box with small holes for air exchange and carbon dioxide build up) with perlite. This was exactly 12 days ago. The humidity was at 99% and i kept everything sterile.
After 10 days nothing happened so i started to worry. I thought the mycelium was way to wet since it had bigger water droplets at the side of the casing.
I then transfered it to a big air sealed terrarium (of course sterilized) since i thought the humidity in the plastic box was below healthy and tried to keep the humidity at around 70% by opening the top a bit and fanning some air inside. But the humidity would eventually go up to 99%. And i didn't even sprayed water in the terrarium or put some perlite in it. It went up all by the wet grow kit it self.
Now after two days of trying to get some of the humidity of and out of the grow kit still nothing has happened. But there are no contanimations too which is good
Maybe you guys can help me with that. Maybe i just have to wait, but i think the mycelium is way to wet.

EDIT: Also there are some weird structures of mycelium building up. Pictures below!

Here are some pictures:

So here is the kit from above:

Another angle:

These are the weird structures:

Another angle plus you can see water droplets on the mycelium:

And here you can see how wet the case is:

All pics were taken 12 days after soaking the mycelium for 12 hrs.

I hope you can make out whats going on. Please help me!

Thanks!
Chiru

ouch.. I guess the kit came already colonized. the "being sterile" part is over, that's for colonization.

now for fruiting you want lots of fresh air exchange going on in your fruiting chamber. A plastic bag or box with no holes is not a fruiting chamber.
if they cake looks dry from all the fresh air, mist with water. keep this going and you will have mushrooms.

shot gun fruiting chamber (SGFC) is what you want.

Oh okay i know being sterile is no that important any longer. and it has fresh air exchange. im fanning the terrarium multiple times a day. or is this not enough? the humidity is at 99% all the time. But i have the feeling that my cake is way to wet. it even has water droplets on it from the wet air.

Oh and i will check the SGFC out thanks dude!

no that's not enough, it wants to breathe all the time like you do, not "multiple times a day"

you dont want or need 99%rh, you want it to fluctuate and cause evaporation. fresh air is way more important than rh. just mist with water when it looks dry to replenish RH where it matters (on the substrate)

Plenty of FAE, I fan about 7 times a day and mIst around 3, when you see pins form
You don't have to worry about misting too much  and if it looks like the mycelium has too much water don't most at all, your well on your way to grow some nice shrooms! Good luck with your grow! Hope you get big fruits

you gotta remember cubes are like weed and want to grow no matter how bad the conditions are. They will fruit in a trash can and with no air exchange or fanning at all,
they just grow so much better when you provide perfect conditions. for cubes that's said to be between 3-6 exchanges of air pr HOUR..not day.
no one has time for that so that's why we automate our chambers with holes.

Yeah they have holes with polyfill.

I just like to be extra thorough as when I take care of them, they will take care of me. :tongue2:

Monotubs dont really benefit from fanning, you just dry out the air which dries out the mushrooms faster.
OP doesnt have a monotub tho.

I can see that, I have a make shift mono with paper towels at the side which I mist for extra humidity. It's not like i fan for no purpose. Fanning while there is moisture on the mycelium is said to be a trigger for pinning is all.

1. Fanning does not achieve the FAE needed. A properly built FC does. Be it a SGFC or Monotub...

2. It IS possible to mist too much. Only mist when needed (when surface starts to get dry).  Too much misting and the surface of the substrate will stay wet. You want the moisture to evaporate off the surface between each misting to promote pinning. Fanning after a misting helps to jump start the evaporation.

I guess I wasn't clear, I do have holes at the side with polyfill for regular FAE.

I just fan after misting to promote pinning.

Cheers anyway

Oh wow o_o
So many replies. I clearly underestimated this forum!
Yes will build a proper FC (Fruiting Chamber, i guess?). Thanks for the help guys! And what does FAE mean?

EDIT: Nevermind, pretty sure it means "Fresh Air Exchange"
