Just lost a big ass bass

I never really catch bass, mostly crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Today I decided to try out some live minnows, really small ones. I had a #6 hook through their bottom lip, about 4 feet deep. I was catching a lot of smaller to normal sized crappie, then I went to fish this spot with a downed tree in the water. Instantly, my bobber went all the way under. I'm a somewhat novice fisherman, been fishing about 4 months now. I'm a lot better than when I started.
anyway, my first mistake was I hardly set the hook. I never really set the hook hard with crappie, and I thought it was just a crappie at first, but as soon as he knew he was hooked I figured out it was a huge bass, because he was fighting like a fucking catfish.
Second, I should of horsed him in. He went straight the fuck under the tree and I lost him. I cant say how heavy he was, but he had my ugly stick bent in half and I saw him through the water and he looked fucking huge compared to the other bass I've caught (I've caught 3 big ones I assume were over 5 pounds, about 10 small 1-2 pound ones, he was definitely bigger than the big ones).
Anyway, its a pretty shit feeling losing a fish that would of probably beat your record. I tried to recatch him, threw a minnow in the same spot, waited 10 minutes, and a turtle ate it. So, I went the fuck home

damn a #6 hook? that's pretty small. I caught a nice bass last Friday when I went fishing. I too started fishing pretty recently. its pretty fun. I just hate when I go out for hours and don't catch anything... that's no fun. do you always use live bait?

Not always, I fish for crappie with grubs most of the time, its the only thing I can seem to catch them on aside from live minnows. I straight suck at catching bass with lures, and have only done it back when they were spawning. Every time I try to catch a bass I end up not catching a single fish, unless I get them with live minnows.
And the #6 hook... It hooks crappie/bass just fine ime, and it hardly does any damage to the minnow, so it seems to give me better action. But id normally use a #4 panfish hook, I was just out of them that day. The thing about bigger bass hooks, like 1/0 and bigger, imo, is that if you hook a minnow with them it kills em pretty quick, unless you have huge minnows.
I've got in the habit of catching 1 bluegill as soon as I get there. That way I always catch atleast one fish

I hear you man. For panfish i like using a #6-#4 hook. lately i've been using a #1 or #2 because ive been trying to catch bigger fish. i use mostly minnow but lately theyve been dying on me as soon as i put them in the water and i dont fish everyday anymore so they die after a day or two of having them at home. do you get big crappies and bluegill? most of the time they're not good size so i just throw them back because i dont want to deal with filleting them and getting a tiny, tiny fillet. caught a pretty nice bass last friday and i took that bad boy home, got him filleted. ill prob eat him tomorrow or on one of my days off. happy fishing. im a noobie too. ive gotten better at it though.

I've got a couple of big crappie and tons of big bluegill. This one lake i go to has gigantic bluegill everywhere. I love catfishing over everything though, because its pretty easy and a good way for a newb to catch some big fish. I've caught several (about 4) 5 pound catfish, 1 like 7-8 pounder, and one that was like 20.

Thanks, Im honestly am still in disbelief
All I do is go to a lake (actually, a fairly small pond) where I *know* they have big catfish. If you can find a good lake (I just started going to random ones and asking the other fisherman if they have big catfish in said lake), but if you can find a good lake catch some bluegill and fillet em and fish the bottom with cutbait, and do a double hook rig using 2 4/0 circle hooks, or wrap a small ball of chicken liver in panty hose and do the same thing.
I also had some success fishing 4 feet under a bobber when I wasnt getting hits on bottom. But I used a 2/0 j hook for fishing under a bobber because it seemed easier to set the hook when you can see the bobber go under.
