Today I was able to get my hands (barely!) on a 31" Peruvian Torch cutting. This things is sizable and quite cool looking. I was planning on dicing around a 16" cutting and a smaller 8" cutting from the bottom. The rest will be extracted sometime in the not so distant future. To all the experienced, would this be alright and not just make it more susceptible to rot and become contaminated?

That's a Cerus sp. Maybe a Cereus Peruvianus. It's not active.

How sure are you about that? The seller said Trichocereus Peruvianus / Echinopsis Peruviana! It was off the top of a 8 foot tall plant that stood for 20 years. I'm sure they knew what kind of Cactus they grew for 20 years.
I'll do a crude IPA extraction to get to the bottom of this.
But if you are correct that's a real bummer.

As sure as the day is long. Google it even....

No way man! If that's the case he lied, or was mistaken about the name. Probably the latter.

They had no clue about what kind of cactus they grew for 20 years.
