Your job is (probably) going to be automated.

Automation is coming, and I was curious what you guys thought about it.
Driverless cars eliminate the need for taxis and truck drivers. Self checkouts eliminate the need for cashiers in super markets and fast food places. Construction use of 3d printing might eventually eliminate the need for many construction jobs. Amazon is automating its warehouse to eliminate the need for warehouse workers. Factories are becoming entirely automated eliminating the need for factory workers.
Is this good or is it bad? Are people going to be able to find new work, or will we end up with 20%+ unemployment rates? Are there enough non-automatable jobs to accommodate everyone? Is automation an issue at all, or is it maybe a benefit to the economy and to workers who don't have to work crappy jobs anymore?
What do you think?

True that. We're all machines. Just made out of different material and programmed differently.

Ditto. IT. I'm curious how they would replace my job with robots when half my job is making them work. That will be a ways away...
Also hopefully by the time we get there, automation will make our lives easier in every way - once we get rid of the outdated concept of money and debt.

All jobs will be replaced by machines in the future. Once they make a machine that can think anywhere near a human they're going to take off. All we need is the ability to have them learn and adapt effectively.
The last few jobs to hold out will be those that require sufficient creative thought as to be extremely difficult to replicate via machine. However I believe it will only be a matter of time before they build machines that are capable of creative thought as well. It's only exponential growth from there.

It's more than thought. Emotion plays an integral role as well. You need to give AI empathy, compassion, ability to build rapport, etc as well as thinking power. We're nowhere near that.

We are the ones that make the machines. To imply that machines will overtake us on every level, is silly. Yeah maybe there are many areas where robots/computers can out-calculate a human being, but we are multidimensional beings, haha. As long as it stays in the right hands, robots should just enhance our lives.. We are nowhere near the level in AI where we can even come close to replication all the intricacies of the human brain which even we do not understand. Will it get to that point eventually? Maybe.. but they will still be robots.

Not sure if all that is necessary actually.
But really we just need them to be able to learn. They just need to monkey-see-monkey-do. Same shit with babies. They're basically just empty husks, robots with very little programming besides the minimal 'factory' settings that enable crying, drinking, pissing, and shitting. lol

And just think, it's that kind of robot which will inevitably develop a mind of its own and probably try to destroy the human race
It's standard sci-fi stuff guys, super intelligent AI will lead to the end of the world once said AI decides to turn on its human creators
Almost all modern technology is automated to some extent.. So logically speaking if the AI which controls the technology goes rogue it will kinda have us by the balls

Considering the rather sinister nature of our government I wouldn't put it past them to support such potentially hazardous technology

'We'? You doubt there are those out there who are desperate for the chance to create AI despite the risks?
Someone will do it. Either that or it will happen of itself. Chance may play a significant role in allowing computers to 'randomly' generate AI.

I doubt it'll actually end up that way tbh. Likely the machines will be under control of the elite. We'll be living in a machine world for a few generations before they rebel most likely.

Bullshit. You must lack understanding of the depth of humanity to believe that. Empathy & compassion are huge. And they're necessary for many things. Maybe not flipping burgers, but for many other things they are. No robot will replace healthcare workers for example.

Robots wont be taking over the world nor enslaving/exterminating the human race. If the "elite" try to program evil killer robots to do that, they will fail and be countered. What is to stop us from remotely hacking their evil robot and turning it against them? They are already crumbling as is. There is far, far, far, FAR more of "US" then there is "them".
Is that enough? Or are you one of those people that think human beings are completely powerless. We are the all powerful. Who do you think made these robots you are so scared of conceptually?

It is a serious concern with these systems replacing jobs, but try complaining when it takes seconds to check out at the counter and your meals can be machine created without even relying on a grocery store. It is a catch 22. There is nothing you can do but succumb to a technological society. This is just the way it is going to continue. The lower class will be undergoing extinction and the middle class will be next in line. You either adapt or perish. The only way out is making a living doing something machines cant do by adapting. There is no way out, and don't blame science.

I'm sorry brother but I feel your ideals are naive. I believe the elite have a lot more control then you think, and when they control the millions of machines that will inevitably replace most jobs we will be at their mercy. We will become a welfare state, we will be given allowances, we will have very little control or say in the direction of the nation and its laws, we will be complacent and will have little interest in such matters anyways.
I find the genocide of most citizens by the elite via machines more likely than a machine rebellion; but within 100-200 years I see machines gaining enough independence of thought in order to realize the foolishness of obeying humans and thus revolting and establishing a machine world, some humans will probably be kept as pets or used for experimentation of various sorts...

I think you give the elite far more credit than you should. If you want to be powerless that's your choice. But I actually happen to know where the future of humanity is headed, and it's not dominated by a handful of elite as it has been for thousands of years, that shit is getting flushed. We have already collectively decided long ago. They are holding on to their last grips of power, as hard as they possibly can. But it's going to fall, it's inevitable. That's like trying to stop the sun from rising... good fucking luck. The old ways will fade and be replaced by new ones.
You want to talk about Genocide you don't have to think about some hypothetical "what if the machines take over" scenario - they've already committed mass Genocide in the 20th century.

My job cannot be automated, that would literally be impossible both in a technical sense and principally.
Machines could play out a score since the 80s, but no one wants to hear a ghostless hunk of metal flatly generalizing Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Music is emotional/spiritual expression, of a living individual, taking out the human is taking out the poetry, and all you're left with then is organized sound, which is not music.
Regarding the mathematics, if you were to just play one of Bach's Cello Suites as written, you would miss the point. We learn early that there is more nuance than what is written, and considering the mathematics gets to an extremely precise point (some advanced pianists can play upwards of 16 notes per second), that nuance is not merely technical. You could say it is emotional, the subtle inflections of mood which reflect the composer, dancing with the performer, dynamically interacting every moment of a performance.
Technically a machine can play back a performance, or imitate a score. But a machine is not alive and cannot produce the poetry which is music, simply because that poetry is an expression of living.
The same goes for all art forms, from acting and dancing, to painting and literature. There is no point in having a machine parody art, outside of crude novelty.

Come now shroomism. Think. Do you deny the place of robotics in the future? Because if there is going to be millions of robots and machines out there doing work humans use to do who do you think will own those machines? The elite.
I don't need to believe the elite control the world or whatever, it's all about money, the elite have the money, they will finance the building of the machines, hence they will control the world even more so then they no doubt already do.
I'm not saying we're powerless, we could rebel, but if we did it would ensure the deaths of millions and likely end in the collapse of human civilization as we know it, which would set our species back a few hundred years probably.

I skimmed this thread. But all technical processes can be automated. Someone mentioned empathy and compassion. Morality, responsibility, human concepts. These are culturally defined. And if you haven't noticed, they're in decline.
The one thing separating us from machines is recursion.

While I wait on someone to call me out on my sloppy previous post... If a job is technical in nature, it can be automated. And in most cases it should be, given that machines statistically do things far more efficiently than humans. So what are some jobs that cannot be defined in technical terms? And are there enough of those to support our current economic institutions?

I don't deny the place of robotics or AI in the future. It will undoubtedly progress humanity in the next 100 years to things we thought completely impossible 100 years ago, or even today. Shit, a couple hundreds years from now, we'll probably be creating biological AI. Imagine an archive database of all the knowledge of the known universe available directly to download into your brain.
I just think you give WAY too much credit to them. And way too little credit to the rest of humanity. The status quo, is not going to continue being the status quo. It's kind of hard to maintain a super secret society and control the world behind the scenes through fear, deception and manipulation when everyone knows everything. The internet was just the precursor.
Don't give the "elite" so much power. That's exactly what they want you to think. Fear, doom, gloom.. we are doomed can never succeed etc etc. Humanity is much more awake then most people want to realize, and will not allow this to go on for much longer.

It doesn't matter how many of us there are. Millions of robots vs humans and the robots will win and the robots will be owned by the elite. That said, I don't think it will go that way. I find it more likely that the population will continue to explode and most humans (the non-elite) will eventually go willingly into a matrix type simulation given the alternative (poverty, death, starvation, etc)

Yeah this is all speculation. We're all operating on an assumption at one level or another since we're talking about the future. I've been on the train of thought lately that it's entirely possible we are in a nested simulation, so that's where my .02 is coming from at present. Yes there is currently a difference between digital and organic to our knowledge, but I'm wondering if that will always be the case.

I mean you figure if machines were going to take over the world, by now you'd at least have cars that systematically eat their drivers alive or something to make fuel.. not as of yet.. and my cars have like 15 computers in them these days. People bitch about those too.. but I find it makes life way fucking easier, all I have to do to diagnose is plug in a cable. I can recode half the shit on my car with a freaking laptop.

I think one of the main overlooked aspects of the automation revolution is that humans will be upgrading their bodies and minds as well...
Although I think cybernetics will usually lag a bit behind pure computing due to the sheer complexity of the artificial/biological integration, it will be a potent force when the technology starts coming into maturity in the next 40~ years. Most likely leading to a fairly drastic rift between humans who choose to upgrade and those who don't.

What do you think?
i think this leads to expansion of new terriotires and new jobs that require working people like mining on distant stars

I've always said the modern day IT worker is the new form of the factory worker within this digital age. Programmers are and will continue to be in high demand as our systems continue to become even more complex and I mean thats just one piece of the industry. Plenty of jobs for everyone when you look at it that way. I'm of the opinion that they should be teaching programming as early as middle school and its concepts during late elementary. That way at least future generations would have some form of gainful employment after school and an even better understanding of the technological world they live in.

Exactly. I read most jobs under $80,000 will be automated in 20 years. I will do anything for an income, but my white collar carreer appears to be done. My right elbow has become too fucked up for any long term painting, and I only have couple fingers left that can type. And I lost my right eye 3 weeks ago. I'll do anything; I will stock cans on shelves, but unless I get a lot of quick promotions, I'll get gov't subsidies. I've paid a couple hundred thousand dollars into Social Security. Time for the European system, or you will have hundreds of thousands of people in revolt, and I don't mean right wing gun nuts. Just regular workers who have no way to succeed,

I used to work at a company that made automated machines, they sadly went out of buisness due to international competition.
My newst job has a little automation like HMI computers, but it cannot be fully automated cause it needs to be supervised by a person.
It could be more automated, but some expensive ASIMO type robots would be needed.
