There's a lot of debate about whether liberal or conservative policies work better, but we have so much history that we no longer need to debate the theory anymore; we can simply look at our 'laboratories of democracy' to see what's best.
Where do workers make the most money? How does higher minimum wage effect employment? Which countries have the strongest middle class?
Here's a nice video about liberal policies in California...

That has more to do with overall pop and size. Under your theory how would you explain Texas at over $296 billion debt?

I wouldn't because each state has a different set of circumstances, at the end of the day most of them are failed experiments.

I can agree w/ that but, in looking through the tool you provided, I noticed that blue states that are more populated are in the same general boat of federal debt as red states w/ lower populations on average.
How can we explain that?

YES!!!
Watch the video from 4:45 to 5:45. California had a huge budget deficit under a Republican Governor, then raised taxes on the rich under a Democratic Governor, and we now have a huge budget surplus.
He also mentioned earlier in the video how Kansas and Louisiana screwed themselves at the same time by lowering taxes on the rich, which created huge budget deficits.
