There are too many factors for that to be true all the time. Generally yes but there are exceptions, for example I have seen really quality modded guitars go for 130~$ and I bought a used 1960 saxophone in decent condition for 120. If your buying new then yeah 100$ or even 200$ won't get you much in many cases but you can score quality deals as well if you look around enough.
I would even argue a lot of expensive instruments are over priced as hell, even the quality ones.
If you have the money for them then good for you but I am a budget musician for the most part.
Oh yeah and the main reason I wanted a bamboo sax in the first place was becouse I intend to try and make one and wanted something to model it after...

You can find an undervalued sax and refurbish it for ridiculously cheap if you're lucky, from what I understand that niche is being run dry though. A lot of people are buying them up, giving them a rub down and turning them over for more "reasonable" prices.
Point in case:
 http://www.saxquest.com/product/view/wow-original-lacquer-selmer-paris-super-balanced-action-tenor-sax-38976-P9687
I've performed on instruments worth $200. Most of my instruments have been worth under $500, nothing over $2000, though I've played more expensive instruments to get a feel (and agree that more isn't necessarily better). It really depends on the instrument, but $30 is suspect for a large, relatively complex woodwind.
Don't get me wrong, I'm always broke and constantly pawning / trading instruments Only commented on the price because you were comparing the $30 vs $130

Well like I said I am getting it mainly to try and replicate so buying an expensive one seems pointless. If the cheap one sucks I will either try to improve it or sell it, both of which would probably be harder with the expensive one.

maybe it was a typo and it was "12 day shipping".
First of all, I would not expect 2 day shipping from Bolivia to the U.S., and second it would not cost only $15. It would cost like $40-50 or more.

Another interesting aspect of this I forgot about is the listing says "fast US shipping" which is part of why I chose that specific one instead of a cheaper but larger one without fast shipping listed.
Logical, I wish that were the case but they clearly said "17-19 days average" when I asked....
17-19 days on top of the 3 weeks it took them to ship it out

Yeah, I'd like to see and hear your project when its complete.
There's little more gratifying in life than building your own instrument and then playing it

If I get around to it this summer I will almost certainly post something about it here if it goes well at least
My dream is to become a luthier even just as a hobby and build my own classic instruments while trying to create new ones

Yeah, I would love to spend more time building instruments, not sure if I will though.
Have quite a lot going on

What have you spent time on? So far I have just done some random guitar mods for the most part but I intend to get more into it over time.

Not much at all. Mostly just repairing instruments, lots of random stuff on various guitars, a little work on my cello and organ, not sure what else. Built a really nice percussion instrument by hand, that was great.
Its sort of the same for me, I can play sports and do various activities all day. Yet with art, so much focus and meticulous detail is necessary, its very difficult to expand past one field. There are exercises I like to show my students, to show them how much focus classical music takes, which will consistently give one vertigo. By the time a 6hr practice session is done, sitting down and painting just feels tedious
There's so much to do in this world, its hard to find the time. Have to compromise.

That's awesome! I wish Cellos weren't so expensive as its such a damn cool instrument... I bought a cheap used hammond that I need to learn how to repair. I think its mostly simpler stuff thankfully but I have yet to take the time to figure it out. Lately its been calling to me more though and working on electronics in general is so fascinating and handy if you get even decent at it.

What sort of percussion instrument? That is also really awesome! I had the idea for a small acoustic electronic percussion awhile back that would basically be a small wooden resonating box type thing with piezo's installed and hooked up to a preamp where you could control the EQ. The idea is that you could boost the bass really high and have a bassy acoustic percussion sound from a smaller object or and try out a lot of possibilities.
Wouldn't be surprised if something like that exists already but I have yet to see it. Seems like it would be simple enough to make though.
I want to make a bamboo xylophone type thing too just becouse I have a ton of bamboo in my yard

What do you teach? A 6hr practice session must take some serious motivation! I am lucky to get 6 hours in a day on all the random things I am trying to learn

I often find myself wishing there were 6 more hours in a day and 1 more day a week. The best way to find that extra time is by sacrificing sleep! Unfortunately.

I miss the cello, haven't had one in awhile. Not sure if I'll obtain another one or go with a viola. That's far in the future either way.
Don't know anything about electronics, outside of simple shit like soldering

Funnily enough, its basically a wooden box you sit on and play like a djembe. The center has a deep resonant bass, nice mids moving outward and very nice treble at the ends. Mine was mahogany and cedar(?), its called a cajon and would be my favorite percussion outside Tabla, Phakhawaj and Calabash.

Nice, have you made any flutes / bansuris?

6hrs is the ideal, depends on the season - right now I'm making maybe 4hrs, when I injured my arms I was floating around 10hrs (which is too much imo). I teach music itself more than any particular instrument, but can teach quite a few instruments up to a certain point.

Usually I try working less (day-jobs) to get more time
Cutting back on sleep cuts into optimum focus, and I technically should be focusing on making money through music so working more hours in a factory becomes a distraction.
To each their own though, no one seems to want to live as I do.
