Somebody could say Little Wing by SRV, instead of Hendrix, but that's really up to the listener.

For a long time I didn't know All Along the Watchtower was a Bob Dylan cover. That was a definite improvment from the original.

Opeth does a pretty kick ass version of Iron Maidens "Remember Tomorrow" Death's cover of Judas Priest "Painkiller".... I think it's way better than the original.

i don't think any cover song could be better than the orginal, because it's not the original. but didn't Jimmy Page, when he first heard TOOL's rendition of "No Quarter", say, "It sounds like what i heard in my head when i wrote it." a great cover tune extrapolates on a song's content while remaining true to it's statement. btw, To "give quarter" or "grant quarter" means to grant clemency to a captured enemy soldier and refrain from immediately putting him to death, which was the standard practice when "quarter" was first used this way around 1611. It is probable that "quarter" in this sense is the same as the "quarters" (barracks) that soldiers live in. This kind of "quarter" is an antiquated use, meaning simply "place or area," not necessarily one-fourth of anything, and persists in place names such as "the Latin Quarter." So "to grant quarter" originally meant "to provide a prisoner with shelter," and, of course, not to kill him. To "grant no quarter" meant the guy was seriously out of luck. i think the song is about that "no place to go" or "no place to hide" Trip. anyWay, Page and Plant did some amazing covers of their own tunes w/ an Egyptian orchestra on their live LP titled "No Quarter". other great covers: "I Want You" (Beatles) Helmet "Frankenstein" (EWG) Overkill "Dancing Days" (Zep) Stone Temple Pilates "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Nirvana) Tori Amos and, "White Rabbit" (Jefferson Airplane) Kyuss ^Blue Man Group's version was a travesty. oh, my favorite cover has got to be Dark Side Of The Moon by Phish @ Las Vegas 10.31.9? man, it's an incredible experience, only Phish could have pulled that one off.

I used to think the same thing, but then I realized that an artist could have a totally unique interpretation of a song, and thus make it their own.

Hi, I saw this thread linked from mycotopia and just had to reply.
I think Led Zeppelin's version of Gallows Pole is better than the Leadbelly/Traditional version.
Also, String Cheese Incident's Gin and Juice is better than the Snoop Doggy Dog version.

"I Fought the Law" by the Clash was a major improvement over whoever. "Down By the River" and "Hey Joe" by Roy Buchanan as presented on the "Sweet Dreams" anthology are transcendant. Way better than Hendrix's.
