Grow bags, the steps of process??
    #23408904 - 07/03/16 11:37 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

This is GREAT friggin information!! You all rock. This is how to learn. But, why re-invent the light bulb?? Yes, I am new to growth bags and I really do appreciate the information. Thank you all very much. I must say it would be nice to have a "simple" recipe for us "new ones", you know,
Step one. You have received your bags, do this.
Step two, inject down the SIDE of the bag so you can see growth. (I already messed up here by injecting in the middle)
Step three, ???? (when growth of mycelium is at 50%, mix all contents of the bag together??)

etc. etc. etc.

I can repair your radio/stereo, your TV and your computer. I have built 2 houses. I have even made moonshine (do not like it BUT, I know how to make it, that "vinegar nat can ruin everything"). How can I do these things? I have had GREAT teachers. I have also taught many myself. I love to learn, and this is one thing I would love to learn  :-)  I want to learn it all, the bad mushrooms, the edibles, and the magic  etc etc  :-)  You have a willing student, please teach me, I will be your "grasshopper"....

Two weeks ago I started my growth bag learning experience, I hope to do well and I am listening to you. Have I researched? You bet yer sweet ass I have!! And, it is confusing sometimes. Just like other subjects, is milk good for you or bad? I can find both views!! Who is correct?? So, I humble myself to you, the experts on this field of growing mushrooms (in a bag). And, if I can help you, rest assured I will.....

. I am learning this site and have many questions BUT, finding the correct place to ask is confusing?? I have purchased a couple of grow bags and have inoculated them a week ago. Bag one, dung loving series shrooms (PS Cubensis B+), bag two, wood loving series, (PS Azurescens). Have been injected a week ago. June 20, 2016. One bag I can tell is doing OK. I see mycelium. The other wood loving bag, I cannot tell? I hate to bother you personally but, I do not, could not find where to post and ask? If you will point me in the right direction, I'll go there. I will also ask you now for your opinion. I am retired now so I want to enjoy the rest of my life lol. I am thinking from reading and learning, that maybe I should place the Azurescens bag in the refrigerator to bring down the temperature?? Room temp right now is about 24C and changes plus or minus about 4C. Keeping in the dark right now. Here are the pictures after one week;
As you can see, the B+ looks OK to me?? The mycelium is growing. Now, on the other bag, I am not sure? Maybe it is growing in the middle of the bag?? Or, maybe it is there and looks different?? LOL, like I said, I am learning, I am your grasshopper if you want? Thank you,

28C is really hot, for a colder weather species like azures I think it might struggle.

Putting the azures in the fridge would be overkill, I have only ever heard of doing that to induce fruiting on colonised substrate, not for spawn runs.

Try and find some middle ground, 20c or so.

Thank you very much for your reply "weetsie"! The B+ bag is doing excellent!! Week 2; Per instructions from bag supplier, when 50% colonization is obtained in the rye grain, mix contents together and wait for full colonization, then fruiting  :-) That is the ONLY instructions that came with the bags?? Now for the bad,  :-(  the Azures have never started their mycelium growth?? Both bags were inoculated at the same time under the same sterile conditions. Question, does the Azure mycelium need a cooler temperature for growth? I realize that the fruiting needs a lower temperature. Here are the pics at week two; I am assuming that this bag is contaminated... Now I am trying to analyze the failure? Was the bag truly sanitized? Was my spore syringe defective? Was the temperature to high for the mycelium growth for the Azures? Did I do something wrong, or, was this a supplier problem??? How do I isolate the true problem? I really dislike "educated guesses" but at this moment of time, that is all I have. Maybe I am completely incorrect? Maybe the mycelium for Azures looks like this? (I "assumed" that ALL mycelium is a "pure white")? I realize that this is a learning experience, PLEASE teach me, lol.

Your B+ is looking good no doubt.

Your azure bag on the other hand is toast, if you see green you should toss it. If there was azure mycelium growing too there would be some merit in making a patch outside and letting nature have a go but looking at that bag I can't see anything usable.

Azures can colonise at warmer temps but 28c+ is really pushing it, I would really be looking for somewhere cooler to put it.

As for why it contaminated no one can truly know. It could be the substrate, it could be the syringe, it could be improper sterile technique.

Azures are hard to cultivate indoors, really hard. I think I have seen 3 people document it online. Spore syringes are not clean by nature, using them directly to inoculate grain is never 100% and if the spores came from an outdoor patch which is quite possible given the difficulty of indoor azures the syringe is likely to be even dirtier. This is why people use spores>agar>grain instead of spores>grain, as you can be sure of a clean culture.

I'm guessing those bags are pretty expensive, I would recommend following the PF tek and making some BRF cakes to try again with your azure syringe. If you can get a cake or two to colonise it's fairly simple from there to crumble them and spawn them to a woodchip bed outside.

The reason the azure bag is fucked is because it was bought pre made. Pre made spawn has low success rates. You sterilize your spawn in an autoclave/pressure cooker. After sterilization it should be inoculated within a couple days. Shipping defeated that. So that's a step in the wrong direction. Always make your own spawn. Then inoculation with a spore syringe is the worst possible way. Ideally for a advanced species like the Azure's you would germinate spores on agar then inoculate the bags with clean culture

I want to thank you both for replying to me!! I did purchase the bags (and spores) from links on here hoping to help? I guess my bad? Shipping no good, got ya! OK, will take both recommendations and continue. Will let you know the progress as I continue on the "other" road. Again, thank you!!

OK, per Trusted Cultivator suggestions, I did agar. In fact, I inoculated 8 "trays" and put the extra mixture in two non inoculated plates to test my conditions etc.. Results, 8 plates contaminated with green mold, the two plates not inoculated are as clean as the day they were created. Observations= syringe was contaminated, not the purchased spawn bag as thought... Will continue forward with azures. Maybe another supplier?? Oh, by the way, all the others are doing great!! (B+ etc...)

Pretend inoculate the other two clean plates but don't squirt any spores on the plate. I'm guessing your technique is what contaminated the dishes not the syringe

Another reason the azur syringe is dirty is because the fruits the spores were taken from was grown outside. Species in the cyanescens complex are not easily grown indoors, certainly not consistently. Fruits grown outdoors will definitely need to be cleaned up on agar. In fact it may require even slightly more advanced methods to get a clean culture that way.

I would personally avoid messing with woodloving exotics indoors until you have a fair bit more experience under your belt.

Great updates!! [Re: Pastywhyte]
    #23551962 - 08/18/16 12:35 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all, indeed you are correct. I have been reading much about this species and it is not easy to grow, (if they were, everybody would grow them). You have already seen the contaminated bag above so per suggestion, I did Pasty's agar method and again, the samples were contaminated. However, after reading this article that got my attention, I made some more agar mix and "extracted" the "white growth" from the contaminated "plates" tonight. Very curious to see the results. I also want to add that all the syringe "samples" I received from the sporeworks have been better than expected (B+. Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie etc..) By the way, I took the "pop corn" tek and added it to the grain tek (50/50) and I LOVE the results!!   . I did not use rye berries, though, I used EXCELLENT!! Will give more details if anybody is interested but you all being the experts I am sure this is boring lol. I also read just about every version of mono tubs that are out there until I was cross eyed lol. However, I added just a little bit to make mine "mo better" lol.    (notice the fiber screen and the perlite, very low maintenance so far!)  This is a pic of a "tub" in the same type mono tub.   an outside pic of mono tube    Now, on the wheat berries, I only did a 12 hour soak, ( they are smaller). I also used old clothing to dry the outside of the corn and the grain then did the PC thing. If anybody wants to know more just ask... I will grow the azures, my outside beds may be already working? However, I want to grow them inside...  Peace and out!!!

Winter is coming perfect time to get the cultures. Best thing i advise is as soon as you clean the culture make a lot of extra plates. Move to grain spawn then wood and paper in small totes. They take a long time. Once thet colonized it break up into more big totes of wood and paper. Which you can fruit outdoors in the early spring. For indoors keep the small totes and place in a monotub with the temp being in mid 50s. Azures grow very well like reshi. Yeild will suck. If i remember my friend grow his big totes only grow 76 fresh grams.

Starting azurs now is gonna be a bit late though they often need a year or so before you can expect to see fruits outdoors. So if you get a patch going soon you might see fruits next fall, spring might be a little too soon.

I can't really help you on the azur front much but I would suggest that if your were gonna do em in a mono I would go with one small enough to put in a fridge. Cold shocking will be needed for a species like azurescens.

Hello all, just finished my first bulk flush. What must I do to get the 2nd flush? I "think" I must place my tube back into the dark for a week or so? Maybe mist again? Any suggestions? TY in advance!

Now, drying and storing, here we go again, sooooo many different suggestions!!! Do not heat, heating is ok?? (Pulling my hair out) I purchased a food dehydrator yesterday and it has worked, (heat at 160 F with fan). Did I destroy my flush??

Heat is best. No heat takes longer. The longer it takes the worse it ends up. People have deep fried them, pressure cooked them, etc. Fine.

No darkness. Light is beneficial at all stages.

Did you purchase a thing, and then use it, before asking if maybe you destroyed all your hard work by doing so?  Damn that would suck if you were right.

Actually I read on here to use a food dehydrator, I also read do not use heat. My friend Pastywhyte informed me that is the best way. I just wanted re-assurance lol, and I received it. Many great people on here, also many different opinions!!! That's the part that sucks, lol. Pastywhyte is a TC and well know and I trust their opinion.....
