Who here has quit the "normal life" & when?
    #23408154 - 07/03/16 07:21 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

When did you and how did you know you'd never be cut out to live a typical 9-5 lifestyle? Also how did your friends and family react to your decision? Tell me your stories, share your experiences, and whatever else you feel like sharing. Please & thank you. Much appreciated.

I think most ways of quitting the "normal life" are going to involve quite a bit of risk. Assuming you don't already have money when you decide to quit, you'd more or less be looking at something along the lines of selling illegal substances.
Some people keep it simple and clean with natural illegal products like cannabis.

Others like to get dirty and fuck with meth and rob people and other crazy shit.

Regardless on what you're doing, unless you're making some awesome homemade products and selling it on etsy or ebay or something, you're probably risking some jail/prison time and possibly your life.

Cannabis has been a steady income for me in the past. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I stopped selling completely (after doing it for a few years). I didn't realize how stressful it was until I stopped doing it. I told everyone I'm out and I've ignored phone calls ever since then and it's been absolutely great. No drama, no stress, no rushing, just catching up and trying to do what I need to do to get my head straight.

I'm planning on buying tools to do landscaping for money eventually. Taking care of yards and working outside is something I've always had a knack for. You can pick your jobs, name your prices, and do your own hours as long as you get what you need to done when you're supposed to.

BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

Went on the dole because of schizophrenia. Probably always knew that I wasn't cut out for 9 to 5, principally because of boredom.

This alienated me from many university friends, because the sort of person that goes to university is usually a go-getter and might look down on dole bludgers.

My family is mostly all good with it, except for my father who had some delusions about me becoming a heart surgeon.

I'm planning on quitting the 'normal' lifestyle asap.
I'm in my mid 20's and I've saved up enough money for a deposit on a decent house/land.
As soon as I find a place I like, my plan is to start an organic farm.
Once I'm making enough cash to supplement my current income I'm quitting my job.

That's my goal anyway. Fingers crossed it works out.

If you need a good hand in the future :pm:

I love the organic movement and it's something I'm really passionate about. I'm not afraid to bust ass and get dirty either.

I'd love to get to the point where I could offer work / accommodation to like minded people

It's something I'm really passionate about as well. If I could get to the point where I'm mostly disconnected from the grid, that would be even better.

My girlfriend is passionate about animal rescue (as am I) and wants to start a dog rescue / daycare, so I'm looking for a plot of land big enough where we can both do what we love

I'm definitely not down to do anything illegal in order to survive. Not going to risk going to prison or jail which would be no life at all.

dole? whats that?

I hope it works out for you man.

anyone quit their job and go on the road? i'm less concerned with money and more concerned with my mental wellbeing. right now I can buy pretty much anything I desire but I'm still depressed as fuck & angry all the time. it sucks...

to be honest I'm not really passionate about anything like that. I know I cannot help save the world. I honestly don't really care about helping others, saving the planet, or anything like that. I just care about myself. Call me selfish, it's cool. I don't really care. I just want to live life and stop waiting to die. Going to work, coming home in a shit mood, being bored, doing nothing... it's all getting old. The things I'm passionate about is what keeps me going-working out, playing guitar, and skateboarding. I do them less and less these days because I work 5 days a week.

I've done the organic farm thing and it is one of the hardest things you'll ever do, and statistically you're more than likely to fail and ruin your life in the process. You'll be a slave to your land and animals. I do mining now hauling tonnage around to gem shows and making lapidary/jewelry items. It's a much freer life and I get to spend countless nights camping in some of the nicest places on this planet. People look at what I do with awe and get inspired. When you have an organic farm, people just see you as a food producer. There is no respect that comes with that. It's fine if you just want to hang out with wwoofers and scrape in 5k for a season. We had some of the best certified organic berries in all of Oregon and got no respect. We definitely couldn't live off the farm. We would have had to raise cattle, or breed a high end animal like horses etc.

You will have to work so much harder and so much longer for so much less money if you want to "leave the 9-5." If it's LESS work you're looking for, you've got the wrong idea about what it's like to run your own business.

There are TONS of careers out there that don't involve a desk and stereotypical hours. We have a shroomery member who somewhat regularly travels to Antarctica as part of his job. There's marine biology if you love the ocean, forestry related stuff if you love nature, and agriculture programs if you love plants and animals. Hell, you could study library science and work in a library if you like peace and quiet.

You have to enjoy working 12 hours+ per day 7 days a week for subsistence wages if you want to be your own boss. It's way more work, not less. And most business owners fail an average of 7-8 times before they succeed, so there's that, too.

:hugitout: i'm wanting to get away too.  My plan is to get my vehicle paid off and save up some money, quit my job and hit the road.  The problem comes there...i don't know exactly where i want to go or what i want to do.

All i know is i'm not happy doing what i am currently doing.  I make good money sure, but it isn't worth it.  There's nothing exciting about my job or my life, and i feel like i could change that if i got away from here. Then on the flip side i could end up in a worse situation.

Life sucks sometimes man.  I don't know what i'm doing anymore.

I can't really even think of anything that i'm passionate about to begin with

I'm not interested in running my own business. I'm not passionate about anything like marine biology or anything like that. Truthfully I have no fucking clue what I want to do. I have a decent job. I can buy whatever I want right now-within reason... no I can't buy a boat or something like that... I'm just not happy. I'm depressed every day and I'm also angry every day. I've been thinking about just saying fuck this and hitting the road, bumming around, smoking weed, and travelling for a while. This "normal" every day life is just getting so old and depressing. It's the same exact thing every single day. It's making me go insane.

sounds like we are both in the same boat... i feel like im just fucking waiting to die man. not living at all. not doing anything. same thing every day... work, come home in a horrible mood, go to gym (i like this), come home from gym and spend the rest of the day on the computer and/or watching TV. I have literally no friends so I don't hang out with anyone. I get talked to like shit every day at work by customers and as anyone can imagine after a while you just can't fake being happy/nice/cheery anymore.

Move to the Big Island of Hawaii (the island that's named Hawaii). There's land out there for ridiculously cheap considering it's located in Hawaii. That's my plan.

It's really cheap. I enjoy steamed veggies they sell at walmart. It's like less than a $1 and you get a entire meal pretty much- a good volume of food.

Tacobell.. also very cheap.. but not as healthy. lmfao.

Depends what you mean but "quitting the normal life."
One could start a legit business, an illegal business, go homeless/vagrant, become an investor/trader type with futures and stocks and shit like that, running gambling books, online vending, and countless other lifestyles that don't fit in the "normal life" parameters.
Ever heard of Work Away?  You travel places and get free room and board from someone in exchange for pre-agreed work.  There's so many options out there.  Learn to speak Esperanto and travel the world practically free.

What I mean is traveling in a car around the US for an extended period of time. Staying somewhere for however long... get bored... go to your next destination. Shit like that. Just doing whatever you want when you want. I'm not a bum, I have money and a car.
