have you seen this pistol... it's not an assault rifle

At least in my state, if you build an AR to be that of a pistol, you can't just go and turn it into a rifle or vice versa. At least i think that's what i remember? school me on this, pris

Me smoking a joint holds the same danger as buying a semi automatic weapon at Walmart?
You're missing the point. There's nothing dangerous about a law abiding citizen going to walmart and buying a gun just like there isn't a normal person smoking a joint. However, there is for a mentally ill person, sure. Just like a mentally ill person could smoke a joint, loose his shit, and stab someone. Is that grounds to keep weed illegal?
It is the exact same logic. Ban substances/guns because they are dangerous in the hands of certain people, despite not being dangerous when owned/used by a responsible mentally fit person.

When has anyone ever smoked a joint and then stabbed somebody?

This is getting a little ridiculous now for me lol
I applaud California. That is all
I don't hold anything personally against a man/boy that is a super gun nut. I have many friends who are. My views stand where they are. If someone doesn't agree that's fine, we will leave it at that. Agree to disagree.
I know there are many responsible gun owners in this thread.

Yeah the whole joint thing is a little stretch though still valid because weed can people such as schitzophrenics to go all out psychotic. Anyways the initial substances for the analogy was alcohol and tobacco.
Alcohol for example causes a lot of people to become belligerant and violent. Telling me I can't own certain guns because some people do bad things with them is no different than me telling you you cannot drink a beer because it makes some people do bad things. It's pretty simple.
If you are not capabable from understanding such a simple metaphor, I suppose I should try to stop winning a debate with logic.
I personally, like to be able to own said guns and drink said beer without some politician imposing his will on me because he thinks he knows what is best.

If you aren't capable to realize just how all over the map you are and the poetic nature of the way you "grasp at straws", than I should stop engaging you
People do bad things on alcohol...like, assault? Illegal. Like, driving? Illegal. Like, murder? Illegal. Like, buying a weapon designed to kill lots of people all willy nilly? Not so illegal
And it's pretty easy for that same person to have access to weapons willy nilly when it shouldn't be made that easy. Even allowed to conceal or openly carry in many states
So again, your logic is not the same. It's silly

Yeah, and killing people with said legal weapon is... illegal.

You seem confused.
-You first tried to make an analogy how wanting tighter gun regulation, like in Canada, is the same as wanting marijuana illegal....because someone could smoke a joint and stab someone
-when pointed out how ridiculous it sounds and how it is not the same, you admit it's a stretch but you meant tobacco and alcohol. You then proceeded to rant how drinking makes many do bad things and be belligerent.
-i explained how all the bad things people try to do on alcohol, are illegal. All except one....walking down to Walmart to buy a gun all willy nilly. Do people go on mass alcohol poisoning sprees as an act of terrorism?
And furthermore, alcohol is regulated here too. Just like tobacco. Just like firearms.
Obviously there is MORE regulation on firearms than tobacco, for obvious (or should be obvious) reasons.
I'm glad you feel you have nothing left to add tho. Because it's beyond ridiculous at this point how you sound.
You made way more reasonable replies earlier before bodhi heated you all up

Gun control isn't the answer, that's been made clear by seeing how many safe countries allow citizens to buy them. There's clearly other problems in America that contribute to gun violence. That's mental illness and people being useless with background checks I think. I know you've heard it a hundred times already but banning guns isn't going to stop people from making bombs, using knives, fire, vehicles etc. if they want to kill someone. Guns are just tools, and they've already been invented so unless we end up with the toughest customs in the world and make a watch list of people buying 3D printers and explosive powders they're here to stay.
This is completely contrary to the facts. The states with the least amount of gun deaths are those that have the tightest gun control regulations.
"gun deaths"
Why is "gun deaths" the metric you use for a successful gun policy"
Would it make you feel better if "gun deaths" were down but rape, physical assault, robbery, and murder by baseball bats were higher?

With less weapons available for commission in these crimes I imagine you would see less of those crimes happening. They definitely aint slowing down because guns are easy to get.

Pretty hard to mow down 50 people to their death with a baseball bat, so yes, that would personally make me happier
It's probably not that easy to mow 50 people down to their death with one because it was designed and engineered to do what? Play baseball?
What are semi automatic rifles designed for? What about hand guns? Therapeutic reasons as claimed by another member? Target practice?

Really, so according to your ling of reasoning, guns are causing crime? You're very naive.
"definitely aint slowing down because guns are easy to get"
Nobody can prove that hypothetical theory, but criminals think twice when they know the victim might be armed with a gun, that's basic commonsense.

So once again, "gun deaths" are your metric for a sensible gun policy? You wouldn't care if rape, robbery, home invasions, physical assault, and stabbings moved considerably higher?

Yes, their ease of access has a direct effect on crime statistics. Why's that so hard to believe? Its way easier to rob a store with an unregistered pistol then it is with a knife.

You asked how we would feel about bat crime rising. I answered that I wouldn't mind and gave my reasoning. And then asked you some questions around it...

"What about hand guns"
For basic protection.
Your main metric regarding gun policy seems to be mass shooting incidents, why? Why wouldn't overall safety of law abiding citizens be the top priority?

Again, you asked me how I felt about bat crime rising. I said I wouldn't mind because you can't mow down 50 people with one because it's designed to play baseball...not kill people
So again I ask...what are guns designed for? And shouldn't we make it more difficult for people to own and use them? Not ban them. Regulate them better. You know, like Canada. Seems to be working for me I feel safe and free

"Regulate them better"
I don't think anyone is against that practice if it could accomplish the ultimate goal, getting guns out of the hands of criminals, I don't see how that can be done.
"like Canada"
You don't have the criminal cultures of the US, if I send them up North, I think you would have a different perspective.
