GE Filter Discs
    #23405837 - 07/03/16 12:36 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I am curious to know if there are any new innovations in the way of gas exchange as of late. I have been using EZ Felt cut outs for years. Lately, I just don't feel like the crap I have been ordering is substantial enough.

Just wondering what you folks are using. Watman filter discs, EZ Felt, shit, I used to tightly stuff the holes with poly fill, but that is a pita. Any recommendations? I'm trying to replace some old fucked up lids I have, and I want to do it the best way possible

:takingnotes:

I'm trying to decide between SFDs, cellulose filter discs, and EZ felt lids.

Done 60 or so tyvek jars in the last few weeks and even though they work fine I'm so sick of cutting them out.

Well, if you find a cheap watman source for 0.2 um filters, or a good EZ Felt source, let me know. I'm wondering if my ez felt filters may be contributing to some recurring bacterial problems.

The EZ Felt sheets I just received are definitely not up to par.

I'm in the UK and don't think EZ felt brand is distributed here. Was just going to order this unbranded stuff and see if it worked.

That stuff looks like it may work. I guess you would have to try it out to find out.

I am considering buying some watman filters, and cutting small circles out of them to silicone to lids for GE.

Whatman's are better for LC, the GE with them is not as good as I would like for grain. I have both SFD and CFD. They both work good, tho SFD are better suited to resisting moisture. CFD need to be used with care, if they get wet they can come apart or mold or be colonized by the mycelium.

My last run of lids were done old school. Unmodified, just crack the lid a touch to colonize. Worked really good for cubes and we're not bad for other species. Tho if I do pans or other edibles I would prefer a filtered jar.

I don't like the idea of cracking the lid for GE lol. What do you use for SFD's, EZ Felt? Or are you referring to the Watmans? Any links?

I use actual synthetic filters for SFD. Never done felt. Whatman's are syringe filters best used with LC. As for cracking lids it can be sketchy to the novice but I assure you it works fine. Done it lots now.

Here is my write up if you want some discussion. Again I'm not touting it, just saying it's possible.

CFD's = Cotton Filter Disks? Where do you get those? The sponsors?

3/4" holes seem a bit excessive lol. I use one hole in the center, made with a Philips screwdriver and hammer!

cellulose filter disks.

Apparently they are good for many uses, the pore size doesnt change with cycles and they cheap too. You just can't get them wet.

My filters are always wet when they come out of the PC... How do you not get them wet?

They get wet when I spray them down with alcohol too!

Pasty, where do you get your SFDs from, if I may ask?

I got most of my disks from a Canadian vendor that went out of business a few years ago. It was actually evilmushroom666's store. But you can order both CFD and SFD from most of the sponsors.

CFD are easy to keep dry. I use a small folded square of paper towel right over the small circle that I cut out to absorb any excess water. Then foil over that. Elevating the jars out of the water helps a lot as well.

That's my experience too, they always come out of the PC with a few drops of water under the foil which is why I opted for SFDs.

Well thanks a lot fellas. You've been quite informative!

I think I will try one of those options instead of EZ Felt.
