Supercelium?
    #2340580 - 02/16/04 12:19 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I was using verm/brp in Gladware containers that were sterilized in the microwave. I was going to give them as a gift to a friend, but 5 days after innoculation two boxes were severely contaminated in one corner each, each with different diseases which I can't for the life of me recall right now. Anyway, the mycelium on its own accord began to fight back, and is actually beating back the disease in each case.

So my question is this: I'm considering throwing a piece of each mycelium in a petri dish and letting them mate. I should end up with a mycelium culture resistent, at least somewhat, to both diseases, right?

this depends entirely on what the contams were to begin with.

for example: green mold;

green mold does not attack mycelium directly, instead, it competes for food.
ps cubensis has been competeing with trich for eons. if it were going to develop an "immunity" it would have done so by now. the same could be said for cobweb and all the other myriad ails.

you do have a point and i do believe that it would be possible to "raise" some mycelium to be uber resilient. considering the amount of effort and expertise this would require (IOW, good luck throwing that diseased stuff on agar) your better off perfecting your aseptic techniques.

also, i just reread your post and you seem to have a very fallacious view of mushroom sex. study up on that first.

I wonder if a tissue isolate from wild harvested cubensis would be better than average, or even better than most selected culture strains. That's shit's been playing survival of the fittest for years probably, and a tissue isolate from the wild might be some badass shit.

Unfortunately I don't live in an area where cubensis grows naturally.

SO your saying that if you put two kinds of myc in a petri dish, they do it? That kicks ass man!

They will "Do It" depending on the mating code of each strain. they could combine into one strain, or remain two. (asuming that each jar has only one starin colonizing it.)
As for the wild ones. You can clone it and cultivatie it indoors. however chances are that it will take time to domesticate it. (from what i've read)

no they will remain two seperate strains. I will not explain it when Teonan has done such a good job...

from my experience plastic containers are notorious for rasing contams. No matter how steril you are.

I think it has something to do with the fact that plastics hold heat more than glass does therefore creating to much humidity inside the jars in the early stages and gives green molds a strong foothold on the food inside.

no, they could remain two seperate strains. Or they could form one stain depending on the genetic mating type of each. I will not explain it when Paul Stamets has done such a good job in "The Mushroom Cultivator"...

Well, Paul Stamets isn't God and that book doesn't say everything.

What page are you refering to anyway? "Mushroom Genetics," p. 334-341? I'm not really sure what you are talking about, a multispore innoculation trying to grow together? This will create "sectoring."

You will have to show me where Paul says that when two strain's mycelium grow together that they will "do it."
