Depends on the time of year and what I plan on doing while camping.
Do you have anything specific in mind?

I personally like camping sites that are very rarely used. The more rarely used, the better, but that's just me. I go camping to be alone and to get as far away from people as possible.
I wanted to start a thread about good camping places on the west coast to see what places people think are good/enjoy/etc. Just to get a feeling for different camping sites.
So feel free to discuss your experiences with any camping you've done on the west coast

man i used to enjoy the hell out of campsites.. not so much anymore. its almost like people have forgotten to teach their kids how to pick up after themselves. i have traveled to some yellow post sites but with all the restrictions it has lost its charm. i know find myself just finding a place and camping. way away from everything and everybody.

My goal is to get to that point eventually, to where I'm backpacking camping through designated wilderness areas carrying everything I need over a multiday trip. Car camping is kindof to get me started, plus it's super easy.
But you're right, the more people visit a place the crappier it gets. I'm hoping to visit a bunch of camp sites in California to try to find which ones are the least visited and nicest.

Lassen is in the southern Cascade range, which is north of the Sierras.

If you're looking for wilderness areas with multiple day hikes and light crowds, check out the Trinity alps wilderness area. I have backpacked there extensively and absolutely love that place. It has a lot to offer, granite peaks, deep lakes, oldgrowth forests, wildlife, and interesting history.

I have been wanting so badly to check out the alps. Everyone I've talked to who has been there says it is hands down the best place to go backpacking.

That is gorgeous. How trafficked is it by people?

I assumed you were both referring to lassen national forest, but that's the only lassen I'm familiar with. The one with the volcano stuff. Where is this other lassen?
Apparently lassen national forest is a part of the cascades and not the sierras, which I didn't know at all. It looks on a map like one continuous range. Makes me wonder what the border is and how such a border is defined. Maybe there's a gap between the Sierras and the Cascades somewhere?

Just checked a map and did a bunch of googling, I can't find any Lassen south of Yosemite. Can you be more specific and help me out a little maybe?

Apparently the split is at Fredonyer Pass and the Susan River. I have never been east of the 5 on highway 36 so I've never seen it all up close, looks like an amazing area.

You gotta put in some effort to reach most of the attractions here and being a wilderness area usually keeps away the tourist. Some trail can be crowded on the weekends, but hiking and camping smart can add to the solitude. Besides, you may learn a lot by talking with fellow hikers.

Yea, Trinity County isn't exactly a tourist destination.
Thank God (or all the crazy ass farmers).

Yet
I really hope these remote places stay remote for as long as possible. Hopefully the wildernesses will stay not very trafficked forever, but already some have become so busy that you have to reserve a timeslot to get in.

Backpacking in wilderness areas is my ultimate goal, but I'm a long way off from that. I'm almost a total noob (I've just done standard car camping and hiking stuff before). I've been trying to read up as much as possible on safety, how to actually do this stuff, pretty much everything I need to know about backpacking, but a lot of it comes down to the physical aspects of actually doing it. Carrying a heavy pack usually without a trail (although some wildernesses do have some good trails) over rough terrain. I need to work up to that physically, mentally, and preparedness wise.
I agree that all the fellow hikers I've met so far have been wonderful people. Something about the trail or hiking maybe makes people really friendly. But, it's isolation and pristine wilderness I'm really after. There's nothing like that feeling of being the only human being as far as you can see.

I've only camped at 3 places in California so far. This one is my favorite so far. I'm pretty sure it was in Ansel Adams Wilderness or right outside of it
