Prepping for a monotub grow

I've decided to jump out of my little kiddie BRF cake boots and try my hand at a bulk grow. I feel I've done the correct research but I'd like to see if what I'm thinking is right on the money.
1. So I have a 66 qt sterlite and I'm supposed to have 1 5cm hole each at the top of each end and 2 5cm holes (distance apart?) on each side right above substrate level.
2. I'm using 13 qts of substrate (10 qts coir/3 qts verm/3 cups gypsum) pasteurized with 6 qts of boiling water using bucket tek. I'm adding 2 qts of BRF spawn (I know this isn't ideal but it's what I have to work with). Is the 1:6-7 ratio too low?
3. I let the tub sit until a few days after full colonization of the substrate before putting it into fruiting conditions. I plan on using 2 qts of a 50/50 peat/verm mix as a casing. Should I apply it when I place the tub into fruiting or before?
4. As for dialing my monotub, I should be able to finely mist my substrate and have it be dry again in 12-16 hours, correct? Also, how do I tell when to mist?
Thank you shroomerites for all the help and knowledge I've gained these past couple months. I'm beyond stoked to get more involved in this hobby and hopefully in the near future, I can show off some impressive(ish) results!

That spawn ratio is a bit low, personally I would do a half brick of coir/1qt of verm (around 5 quarts or so of substrate) in a 27 quart tub with that much spawn, one hole at sub level on the long sides one at top on each short side. Case and put into fruiting conditions at spawning.

The long side holes are 1/3 length in
3 cups of gypsum is 3x of the recipe commonly used.
2 quarts is ok, but you will have longer consolidation times. My 66L right now are 5 pints each. 4" sub depth
Couple 23L might be safer for the first run, and are nice to have around for testing or new strains.
Sounds like you read enough though. Best of luck!

Hey man your setup sounds solid. I use grain spawn but 2 qts BRF spawn with your 13 qts grain spawn should be fine. Your ratio sounds good. The more spawn the better. I've had great success with my 71 qt tub with 1.625 (diameter) inch holes roughly 5 inches apart, 4 at sub level (2 on each side) and two higher up on either side, like you said. It's good to wait after full colonization of the bulk substrate has taken place. I wait 14 days minimum. Personally, I'd only apply casing layers after the first flush. As for when to mist, I mist my substrate only when it looks too dry and needs moisture. IME, substrate with many glimmering moisture drops on it works just great, so I'd just mist it till you think there are many of those.

Thank you all for the responses.
Funk, how do I distinguish if my sub is too dry? Will that just be when it's no longer glistening/at field capacity if I'm using a casing? Or should I give it more time in between mistings?

A properly dialed in Monotub will not need to be misted at all except once or twice total....maybe...
Unless you are growing penis envy I suggest you skip casing....pasteurization is not hard, but your parameters did not include lime which aids in buffering ph (technically it just prevents it from getting too low), and maintaining proper moisture content. Peat moss requires these additional guards because of how prone it is to harbouring contamination. .if you insist on casing you are much better off using just 50/50 coir/verm and leave the peat moss for when you have the lime.
I use 1inch holes on the sides on the long sides of my tub at substrate level (4") and 1.5" holes at the top of the short sides under the handles....super easy to dial in.
You aren't far off of generating some grain spawn....personally with your 2qts of spawn capacity, I would cut your substrate recipe in half and as the other said, use a smaller tub...if anything it will be sooner til you have fruits.
Good luck.

I put my long side holes 4 inches from the bottom and about 5 inches in on a 66 qt. That is about a 1/3 of the way in. The spawn to substrate ratio is a little low, but you should be fine. Just make sure your spawn/substrate mix is a good 3-4 inches high in the tub. That does seem like a lot of gypsum. I usually use 1/2 to 1 cup of gypsum with that amount of substrate. Everything looks good though. Good luck!! This is the most exciting step going from cakes to monotubs, except for working with agar.
