Reddit hints that U.S. now spying on its customers * 1

It seems that the federal government has made a demand -- in a controversial secret court -- to spy on Reddit users.

Normally, the discussion website Reddit would never be allowed to even acknowledge that it received such a request. But thanks to a legal hack, the company has tipped off its customers.

Federal agencies have a tool of mass surveillance called a "National Security Letter." It's a formal request that's usually issued by the FBI to an American company seeking information about customers.

The legal demand is approved by the FBI itself -- unlike a warrant, which must be approved by a judge. And the subject company that receives a National Security Letter must stay absolutely silent about it.

Sometimes, even a company's CEO doesn't know.

If this request is anything like previous ones, the government is likely seeking the true identities of some Reddit customers by obtaining computer logs of all their activity on the website. The government is also likely looking at the Internet Protocol address of customers' computers to figure out their physical location.

How Reddit made this public

Ever since ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden in 2013 revealed the extent of U.S. government surveillance, some technology companies have adopted a legal hack to alert the public when they receive these secret demands for information.

It's called a "warrant canary." Here's the logic: Although a company can't say when it has received a National Security Letter, it can say when it has not received one. So, some companies have included special language in public statements saying things like, "We haven't received an NSL yet."

The idea is, when an NSL comes around, the language disappears. It's like a canary in a coal mine that dies when exposed to toxic gas.

Only a few companies -- mostly high tech ones that have a strong pro-privacy stance -- have adopted this, such as websites Pinterest, Reddit, and Tumblr, software maker Adobe, phone maker Silent Circle, and mobile cybersecurity company Lookout.

In Reddit's case, the company previously included this language in its 2014 "transparency report," which documented how many times governments have requested information on Reddit users.

"As of January 29, 2015, reddit has never received a National Security Letter," the company wrote then. "If we ever receive such a request, we would seek to let the public know it existed."

That language disappeared in its next transparency report. Reuters was the first to discover this.

Reddit did not respond to requests for comment. But the company wouldn't legally be allowed to disclose anything anyway.

It's impossible for CNNMoney to determine what the national security letter requested. It could be full information on a single user -- or everyone.

Lucked out on the Senate vote on this, I'm sure the FBI is going to keep trying to push this spy method through congress until eventually everything is fair game without a warrant.

The drug war is like a guerilla war and the US is not good at guerrilla wars.

Well, it's government policy and public opinion that hasn't been good for "guerilla wars". If taken of the leash, the special operations units that specialize in Unconventional Warfare ((US Army Special Forces are experts at this task, as well as SFOD-Delta and ST6, Marine Raiders etc.)) would be able to operate without excessive legal constraint. It's lawyers who ultimately give final authorization for missions.

The US has the best SOF command on earth and we already engage in Unconventional Warfare via JSOC's highly successful worldwide Kill/Capture campaign. You don't hear about most of this in the news unless you're really looking for it, and even then it's only what's released or leaked. They are by nature jobs/tasks that if done right nobody ever hears about them.

That being said, the drug war is not like guerilla warfare. You could call it many things...a low-intensity conflict, Political/Psychological/Economic warfare, Social engineering, hell even a class war or a war on cognitive liberty. But no, not guerilla warfare.

Whut? That's a tiny part of the global war on drugs, one gear in a big machine. You can split hairs all you want but the problem is infinitely bigger than a few extremist political/military factions who happen to source part of their funding from drug trafficking activities.

It is not a small part.  Guerilla tactics/groups produce and traffic a majority of drugs outside the USA.  Within the states organized crime uses tactics that are much like intelligence activities.  A huge part of what Spec ops do are anti narcotic operations.  Narco terrorists are big players.  Bin laden profited hugely from heroin.  Drugs are a natural resource and are fought over as such.  It's as big of a prize as oil and gas.

I agree, and of course America profits from the drug war as well just like everyone else while they are "countering" it at the same time.

Great question! Is there such language at all anywhere on the site or a place where it *used* to be? 0.0

I remember RR sent me a msg back in the day saying that they never gave info away about anyone... But of course RR has been away from shroomery for a while now.

Honestly: this would SEEM like a great place for 5.0 to lurk around, with peoples pics and logs and ips and such (and possibly FB pages!)

But if not interested in busting some 19 year old PF tekker or some guy with trichoderma in his tub, really wont find much else of interest

Still kind of a frightening thought that our activities may or may not be watched without our knowledge. Orwellian much?

Yes def. kinda a dumb move if you ask me to be so public, but, people wanna get on i guess...

(Just try to have SOME security? Lol. For a black market? Other than just tor of course)

BUT the larger question here is about Shroomery i think, someone raised a great point. HAS this forum or website ever had to do this? Any point in time? I know there was a period where someone died and there was some scrunity... But yeah as a regular user, this info is clearly very important!

https://canarywatch.org

^they listed many canaries, which included lots of VPN's but eventually couldnt keep up with how hard they are to catch by one group of people. Its a good source of info on how this works.
