Pholiotina smithii? Colorado ID
    #23404145 - 07/02/16 01:32 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

found on lawn near other mushrooms (pans)

very small, inch and a half height, 1/4 inch cap, will get spore print but will probably be brown.  Stipe is whiter than pics show.  Very delicate and wilts when picked.

Conocybe sp. for sure. Rusty-cinnamon spores in deposit. Possibly toxic.

Sans the bruising, though...

Can't tell without looking at the microscopy since there's no visible bruising, i think alan did it in another thread

I give you the choice of 2 pills.

With each containing one of the following:
Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk?
Didn't think so.

This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.

Looking at your last picture, I find the stem color and texture seeming different.

Mind you, I have never set my eyes on P. smithii in real life, only in pictures.

I know there are some small ones still at the spot.  i will try and document the mushroom once its picked.  The stems are pure white but they do not seem to have the 'girth' that the documented pics show.

this pic shows how they have wilted and the white stipe has faded to a tan color.  Not sure if that is any bluing on the one stipe.

I saw these mushrooms a few weeks ago...Could not really do anything but take a quick pic.  It would have been odd since people were having a party on the porch and I would be on the lawn.....

An in situ pic.  Possibly bluing on the old one?  If anyone would want to microscopically study these, Pm ME AND I CAN SEND SOME SAMPLES.  I would be interested in what it actually is.

I also see the bluing, and also on another base of the stipe in this photo. It could Be Pholiotina smithii, but my feeling says Pholiotina cyanopus.

Congratulations!

Go back and pick more. And try to get more photos from the habitat please. It looks like you can get some nice myco porn for us there... Use the ground as support so you won't get motion blur.

Now that I start looking, I see them on the edges of lawns.  they are often barely up as the stipe is fragile.

I once found Pholiotina (Conocybe) Cyanapus in my own back yard.  Never took a pic.  That is what got me started looking and learning the shrooms around here.  Haven't seen once since. They are quite beautiful.

some more pics...I will get better pics, seems they need to be picked and then photographed right away.

OK, going to throw out a quick 'impression'....I suspect these guys change very much as they get older.  Maybe not a world shaker but...

By this I mean they start out pretty much looking as some non-descript mushroom, but they get the cap color, (and also deep with age), but also get a fatty lower stipe, and that is perhaps when they get the most blue coloring?
Just a thought.  The odd thing is that the stipe might get whiter with age?

I just might take 8 by 16 by 4 inch section...

The cap color depends on how dry it is. Yours look very dry (=light sand color), but becomes more caramel brown when wet. check out my gallery. I can't say the stipes changes mush. Always very light colored, almost white.

From my own experience, the bluing is very random and not visible on all mushrooms, this could also be related to the moisture content. Sometimes you can pick many with very deep blue bases, the next time only one in ten show faint bluing. This makes identifying mushrooms on a new spot very hard. And as you mentioned, they are very fragile and often break off so you don't get the lower base.

In northern Europe Conocybe tenera (darker stipe) and Conocybe apala (bigger sized adult mushrooms) is the most common mushrooms to misidentify as an active Pholiotina. I don't know how it is in Colorado..

You should be very careful with the identification. In my spots I had other Conocybe, Deconica and Galerina growing very close to the Pholiotina's (just a couple of inches away). For example, I'm suspicious about the smaller ones in the middle of your last habitat photos. Bolbitius-yellowish stipes... I could be wrong.

I find them to be an interesting species, thing is unless they have a microscope hunting them for the purpose of active content seems pretty risky, especially since you mentioned galerinas i mean a few may not do anything but say an entire batch of them for a new hunter would be pretty bad, they're interesting just in my opinion not the safest active to hunt, kinda like inocybes, they exist and have activity but not recommended to hunt unless you have the necessary gear to identify them, of course this doesn't matter much if they're blueing at the base but still.

totally agree.  a nice focused pic of that exact specimen would put it to rest AFA bluing.

Yeah, I blew it.  Hot weather has really put a shrink on any delicate fungi.  At least I know two spots in the future.

These things are so hard to spot that the only way I saw these was because I saw Pans around them before!!!!
