My take on the wafer TEK
    #23404007 - 07/02/16 12:30 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

For anyone wondering the wafer TEK is here: http://archives.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/5/4897.html

It's where you cut your cake into little slices then cover with a pastuerized casing material like coir or peat to maximise the surface area for your cakes for a (hopefully) better yield.

Instead of using pasteurised peat I'm using sterilised (properly I hope) BRF and verm mix saturated. I made a liner out of bin bags to stop light from the bottom and sides and bacteria resistant paper towels at the sides to increase the humidity because I don't have perlite and I'm using what I have.  I'm using a light at the top to encourage the shrooms to grow up rather than the sides as the sides are semi translucent.

After 2-3 days of letting the little wafers recover I scraped the top of the sub off and started fanning and misting.

the results are 4 pins so far but it's only 2 days into the fanning and misting.

I'll post progress reports if anyone's interested, would enjoy some feedback as I'm still new. Cheers .

For anyone interested they are B+.

Interesting choice of TEK to follow.

Its a cool idea if it worked 2001 was such a long time ago though if it were that good wouldn't that be what we all did with Pf cakes

that's good.

i do wish you luck. just be mindful of what you read, and when it was posted(not to mention where =p)

but, seriously, good luck on your endeavors.

EDIT - also, there are much better ways to spawn to bulk, even with brf cakes. just do some searching and research on this site. and filter your searches for threads newer than 5 years or so

Cheers man appreciate it, just experimenting to see if it has any credence, of course the body of the cakes are not as large as a full cake so the yield may not be as good but worth a shot

Most require breaking up the cakes and spawning to bulk using pasteurised  material which I do not have, my compost is infested with bugs and the like and the method for pasteurisation would probably be more contaminated then using the sterilised BRF mixture.

Thanks for the feedback . once my materials run dry and I get paid I'll get some rye, coir and broaden my ways.

Do you know of anyway to use only Verm and brf for a better way to spawn to bulk? I'm pretty interested .

sterilized brf is not a bulk sub nor casing layer, it needs to stay sterile until colonized (like in pf-tek).

slicing cakes and casing instead of crumbling/grating and spawning... gotta be topia

I didn't actually get the info from topia, just used the materials I had to attempt to give the cakes some nutrients for when it fruits.

When in reality I probably just gave my wafers a huge contam risk and could have achieved the same result as just putting the wafers on some verm for moisture.

Thanks for the heads up, still a learning curve for me and I shouldn't really deviate from TEK's.

dont put brf cakes to more verm, its a stupid idea and one I had myself when I started out and hadnt found or used any forums yet.
cakes are already 2/3s verm, more verm is not what they want.

fruit cakes as cakes if  you cant access coir, manure or any other bulk sub.

Thanks for the advice will take into account after these cakes are dunked.

What about rolling the cake in verm after dunking? I've heard it helps with moisture, worked perfectly fine with my last flush.

The original tek called for a casing layer but as soon as you go adding BRF you have a nutritious substrate instead. When using any grain flour in a bulk substrate it's important to not only sterilise it but to keep it sterile while it colonises. I think the chances of it turning into a mess of contaminants is quite high but hopefully you'll get a good harvest before then. :tongue2:

I'm hoping the same thing here haha . Some of the pins are already growing fairly strong and all it takes is one healthy mushroom to give me the spores I need to start the cycle again. Cheers

One question, should I take out the cakes and place them in a different container for fruiting then or just chance it with the BRF mixture that could be a potential contam risk? From what I've seen on this thread alone it's providing next to no benefit for the mycelium.

Could you clarify?

Are you talking about removing the slices of cake in the photos from the BRF/verm mix?

Yeah, and wash them and put them in a more suitable environment?

I probably wouldn't wash them. If you take them out you could stack em back up and fruit them like a normal cake :rofl2:

It's up to you, on one hand repeatedly messing with them is not good but then neither is having large areas of uncolonised supplemented substrate.
