One Lonely Cube -FL
    #23403841 - 07/02/16 11:33 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So I have been using this forum as a tool for many years now and never felt the urge to post but I figured I would change that! Hear my story and let me know your opinion or thoughts about what I should do!

Here in Central FL we have bountiful mushies (mostly cubes in my experience) but some of the fields are getting harder and the yeilds are decreasing. Obviously this is circumstantial to my area, may be completely different for you!

Yesterday It rained and got sunny in the later afternoon so I went and scoped out a newish field. This field is adjacent to a previous honey hole (field A) that has been turned into a development. I've heard stories about adjacent field B and it producing so I figured I'd take the risk of hoping the fence. In my trail search there were a ton of inactive Pans and hardly any cubes. I successfully harvested two teeny bopper cubes and called it quits. The inactive P. papilionaceus are growing alongside the cubes that I have found and seem like they are far more consistent but it gets me excited because I have found enough Cubes to give me hope!

Habitat: Treeline in partial shade near shrubbery and bases of trees.

This habitat is pretty different than my normal cube finds in that I normally will be able to spot them in the center of a tall grassy plain.

(NOTE): This field is in a very convenient area but somewhat hidden in plain sight.

TODAY: In the later morning hours I went back to this field in hopes that some more Cubes reared their heads. Unfortunately the Cows were cooling off in the only entry area. As well, this is the area with the most grow activity since it's were the cows are pooping the most. I took my time grid searching the area but it was pretty difficult since this heard was in direct proximity to me. I did have a small encounter with a Bull but I've been in these situations before so it played out fine. I managed to find some smaller cubes in this area growing alongside the Pans but I changed my search to the middle of the field because I didn't want to disturb the heard at all! It is much riskier out in the open since there is foot traffic near by but just As I was having second thoughts, I spotted a big cap from about 100+ yards away. ONE LONELY FRIGGIN CUBE?!?!?!?!?!? Now, why does mother nature tease like this. I could pretty much sight search the entire field from the position I was at and saw absolutely nothing else. I mean, to be fair. I was excited because I spotted it from so far off. WHAT WOULD MEMBERS DO? I'm no expert in the science behind the growth but I know a lot has to do with luck, conditions, moons aligning etc. In my previous experience at Field A and other cube fields it was pretty easy to spot clusters all over the place. Was I just off timing on this one? I can easily return to the field and study it. Should I perhaps give it more time to develop? I know that this is going to be a good spot. Especially since I'm finding decent cubes during my first hunts. Anyways, Happy hunting! Hope to hear so nice insight :-)

Currently taking spore prints.

That's one lonely cube for sure. Very nice looking specimen.

Last picture looks like Conocybe.

You're quite lucky to be able to spot one single active specimen from more than a hundred yards away.

Thinking how I have to go stooped over staring madly into the grass for hours (I love it, though).

Thank you sir! There was a heavy rain early this afternoon so with luck I'll be find some more in the next few days.

I considered it very lucky at the time. I was beginning to feel desperation strike! I love the search as well. Lets just hope the hunting conditions are a little more private next time!

I saw that some Conocybe are potent. What are your thoughts on these guys?

I call them Conoybe coprophila, but even with microscopy Conocybes are difficult to ID to species with any certainty.

Not active and many species in this genus are poisonous.
