SBJ thanks for this. I just picked up the same tote at Wallyworld tonight for $10. I'll be using it for my SAB as well. I just read through this entire thread, and saw a couple things that may be worth adding to the tips section of the first post if you can.
I didn't note who said this;
Quote:
You can use a heat gun to make plastic that isn't crystal clear much more clear. Just point the heat gun at the area you want to be more clear, and keep moving the heat gun back and forth like you're blow drying your hair. Just be careful not to melt the plastic.
This tote is already pretty clear, but anyone know if an actual hairdryer would work?
This is based on one of your own later posts. I added a few things so it can stand on its own without the other post for context;
Quote:
If the SAB cracks when making arm holes, tape works fine as a fix. The thing doesn't need to be water proof or completely air tight. You just want to eliminate as much air movement as possible without creating any vacuums.
*edited to add the bin was $10

I tried the heat gun on some plastic like he said and it just warped on me, didn't get any clearer.

That's disappointing to hear. How close did you hold the heat gun? Maybe it was to close? He mentioned to use it like drying hair. IIRC you are supposed to hold a hair dryer like 12 to 16 inches away.
Anyone else actually get this one to work?

For others, look for a window winterizing kit. The ones that come with basically a sheet of clingwrap with a sticky strip around the perimeter. Cut the whole, place the "clingwrap" over the whole. Hit the film with a hair dryer, and it shrinks up drum tight. I saw this mentioned in a different thread once upon a time. Guy used it for a viewing port in his SAB to make agar work a bit easier.

So im making the airbox... Really a smart invention... But wont the needle run the risk of containing contams when you have to sterilize on outside??? And also, when you have to reinsert your arm, wont that create more problems of airflow and contams? I understand the heat pressure thing of not light inside sab... Lastly, once your arms are inside box, if youre moving the needle out of the holes in cap, in my case 4 since i got 16oz jars, doesnt that increase risk of contams within sab?

A SAB is probably the most common method for inoculations around. Most beginners have the same questions and fears, but this is a tried and true method for doing sterile work. This isn't something I just made up. It has been around and used by many others fr quite some time.
After you flame your needle red hot, it will stay hot enough to kill anything that lands on it until you are ready to inoculate as long as you move it directly to the SAB. Given the size of the needle, it's unlikely anything will land on it any way, especially if you if the air in the room is fairly still.
Yes, there is a slight disturbance of the air when you move in and out of the box and that's why you should move deliberately but slowly to prevent as much disturbance as possible. If you clean everything, use good techniques, and move with caution, you will not disturb the very few particles that may be present.
Good technique includes not putting your hands or tools or other equipment over the top of open sterile containers. Only what you have to to make transfers an inoculations. Put as little over an open sterile container as possible. You get better at this with practice.

This is a very helpful writeup! As someone who's been trying to figure out how to start using agar, with little confidence in SAB setup and technique, it gives me the insight and motivation to try agar. Thanks, SpitballJedi!

Yeah...resurrecting the ancient like an archaeologist! I am getting ready to execute an idea similar to this one. A SAB in a SAR is a great idea! One can hepa the air, go in, shut off hepa, wait five minutes, then....get it done!
Oh, this is reference to a post from last year or so where a still air area was set up to work in with the SAB. The original post didn't quote in mine, so sorry it looks out of left field! Has anyone used this idea? Overkill (assuming that's possible in this hobby)? I looked up SAR in the search function...who knew there were so many posts about SARS but not Still Air Rooms?
