Well, maybe I should give those water crystals a try. I saw someone growing with water absorbing crystals, I think it was some kind of silica or something. I don't recall the results exactly, but it didn't hinder the grow.

Anyway, I don't know why everyone is whining about the cost of coir. I buy 11lb blocks of the shit on amazon for $15. That makes like 10 tubs. That's like $1.50 or less per tub. Either you guys are super cheap, or you're sourcing coir from the wrong place.

With that said, you fellas have sparked my interest in growing in shit. Maybe I can purchase some off one of you fine gentlemen?

Right, but at $1.50/tub,  and with bucket pasteurization, I can make 10+ tubs in one day for like $15+ cost of verm/gypsum.

Just throwing it out there. I guess it's just a matter of preference.

Even if a brick of coir cost 10$ it would still be cheap as fuck relatively and still so easy to prep it makes other substrates seem stupid. Just my .02

Preppin manure is easy too, i just heat up some water to 170f and dump it in a ice cooler with the manure in a pillow.

Some what the same as bucket tek, but with a ice box

Pillow loses good nutrient laden water. Would rather get to field capacity and pasteurize

I pasteurized in jars in my PC. Bring to a boil, put the lid on, give it two hours. There are more efficient methods, but w/e.

Sorry to hijack your thread Pasty. I have a tendency to do that lmao

please Teemo, loose the pillow case and go 5 gallon nylon paint strainers.

cleaner

anyway, with a little 'trial and error' you can get the water to the 'just right' amount so you don't leech too many nutrients.  and, as you say, the plants love the leech water

and, I do PE and like to strip away some nutrients as I think it's critical in avoiding blobs

my 2 cents

ps. and the strainers work great the way I prep grain

I use those for straight straw but mine are made for washing women's underwear :lmafo:. I got the weirdest of looks when I bought them haha, the girl at the counter probably thought I was a cross dresser or something. I never used it with poo though, apart from the leaching, I use composted (store) manure and it pretty much dissolves in water. I still use my drum barrel pasteurizer but I fill it with jars instead. The thing that turns me off most is having to squeeze out the moisture to get field capacity, that's why I never really tried it.

Because, logic. Not something I "know", something I believe. You can question it all you like really, there's nothing else I would rather use.

From this:

To this:

When I used straight straw I didn't notice this difference. Shrooms were bigger but not this big and definitely not this dense. 2nd tray was bacterial as fuck as well

After looking at this I must say that the real difference between these two substrates looks to be pinset. The larger fruits are throwing a sparse pinset in comparison to the coir tray. I suspect that were you able to supply greater water to the denser pinset you would have seen an increase in the size of the fruits.

I have a wikidzon clone that will pin like mad in a cased substrate. This often results in smaller fruits in a standard cased mono regardless of substrate composition. However when uncased it's a much thinner pinset but the fruits get huge by comparison.

The real kicker with this clone is that when I run it cased in bottles the pinset is dense as usual but the greater volume of sub per fruiting area results in massive fruits.

Pinset vs water supply dictates fruit size IMO. Substrate composition is secondary at best.

The yield was still ultimately better, somewhere around 1.5x of the coir trays. Granted, it's all MS and there will be discrepancies but every single coir tray grew small shrooms and every single poo tray grew large ones. I suspect the smaller pinset is due to bacteria. I wish to test this out more but having a hard time growing anything but molds atm.

BTW, I would say that the coir had the same (if not more) water that the poo&straw mix had. Straw does hold more water than coir but I prep coir wetter than poo&straw. Field capacity for poo is a couple of drops with a hard squeeze vs a stream of water with coir. I don't believe water was the issue, especially since I got the same sized shrooms over multiple coir grows.  Incidentally, the one I pictures was my first attempt at poo so I prepped it wetter than I was supposed to, this probably did more harm than good though. I mist pretty well.

I'll definitely do some more controlled attempts with clones and isolates on poo. So far it seems to work better than coir for me though, regardless of what the coir evangelists say

I believe in the power of clean spawn. Substrate idolators will never see the light of the coming of the Lord. . .

:raptorJesus:

Okay here is a quick daily pic dump. OP is not going to be updated tho

Clone A, coir on the left and poo on the right

Clone B,

Clone C,

So far its looking like the coir tubs are moving along quicker on average. This variety often seems so slow to put in the pinset and then one day its suddenly jammed with fruits. Hopefully these will be the same. However I am pretty happy with the way clone A is looking so far on both coir and manure.

Clone C has a interesting freak shroom in coming in. Gonna definitely bump the FAE tomorrow.

 @ the shroom on clone C. Looks like a :casket: with the balls and all.

Yep, clean spawn is where it's at, that's why I firmly believe what I believe but I think that's enough of that.
