Rinsing grains before soak

When I make spawn, i do about 5 gallons of birdseed. I fill buckets with seed and then fill with water, pull out all the floating sunflower seeds and set them aside and then strain the seed through a strainer and repeat at least 3 times.
I hate this part of the job and I get seeds all over the driveway through the strainer. Plus its very time consuming. Anybody have an easier way to clean large amounts of grain before a soak? What would happen if i Just skipped the rinse entirely?

If really dirty and you must strain you could get a window screen or something and set up on something to suspend it like construction horses or just like 2 chairs or whatever and just spread em out on that and rinse through. Or some real fine mesh like mosquito netting where you can like bag it and rinse. I'm guessing your talking about the millet getting through your colander? If they aren't horrible dusty I'd say just skip it. The grain I get doesn't need to be rinsed until the very end of the bag. But I've had some dirty grain before from different vendors. I use rye though.
