Those are the ingredients, but doesn't account for the way they look. Doesn't look like they were stirred to an even consistency before loading jars.

Verm looks fine, if not a little coarse.

Looks as chunky as mine use to be...which I think is partly why it never seemed to mix properly for me.
That might have something to do with how it looks, maybe not. I know my brf grows were kind of shitty except for my first one. Haven't had any problems since switching to bulk.

Also perhaps you sterilized them too long and caused the inner contents to burn? I'm not sure how possible that is but I've done it to some rye jars before

Verm looks fine, if not a little coarse.
I like to take coarse verm and run it through a coffee grinder to the needed texture. I used a coarse/medium grade for cakes and a finely ground, but not quite powdered grade for casing.
I also let the verm and water sit a few minutes before adding in the BRF. I don't think it is a matter of time spent mixing, but thoroughness of mixing. I use a wire whisk.

I would do the other way around... Chunky bits work better for casing layers. Fine works better for cakes. You're aiming for an airy humid microclimate.
