a series of questions from a new cultivator
    #23398548 - 06/30/16 06:42 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

OK I have been reading on mushroom cultivation for years and finally decided to try my hand at thw cultivation of a few strains! Just hoping for helpful tips on them, and I have a couple specific questions about some species and techniques specifically.

Golden Oyster- My myc is so thick it won't shake. Normal?
Also not fruiting invitro whatsoever (I figure/hope lack of FAE). Haven't tried open jar yet.
Max temp for outdoor fruiting?

King oyster- Fruits in spawn bags in basement, have a nice healthy, white straw tub producing nothing but aborted pins on my first story floor about 7 degrees Fahrenheit hotter and shotgun style fruit chamber.

Pink oysters-  Max temp for outdoor fruiting?

Lions mane- grow bags have stringy growth. Growing with tops cut like some do other species. (I see some people cutting holes on the sides instead maybe?

Reishi- Hopelessly weak, slow growth on plain grain  without sawdust and woodchips?
shiitake- same question as reishi, and with supplemented spawn can either be grown on straw?

Also my first straw grows got trich, were bags, did not cut enough and forgot air holes,  these are two good reasons to fail correct?

I am rushing through these questions so if more pop up ok n your head that you want to ask or if you have tips of any kind I greatly appreciate it!  Live in the middle of no where southern Ohio and I am just trying to get some decent grows going of at least 4 strains consistently to take to my local farmers market!

Focus on less species to start with - it's tempting to try and grow heaps of different types but until you get some success under you belt you'll have a lot of failure and lose motivation. Also, it would be best if you posted photos, it's easier to work out the issues.

To me, it sounds like your golden oyster and reishi are probably mixed up, reishi gets ridiculously solid and is a fast coloniser.

KO - 7 degrees hotter than what? They need cool weather. If you're getting aborts, probably not enough humidity.

For lion's mane, in general cut slits in the bag.

Pink oysters - they can take it pretty hot if they're out of direct sunlight, maybe close to 100F.

All you strains should colonise grain fine, especially if it's hotter. If they're not, you need to get a new strain.

You're probably getting trich because like you say, not any holes, or your substrate it too wet or maybe you are underspawning with a weak strain.
