Hey watsup guys,
So I decided to go with WBS for grain jar colonizing and I notice when I used this tek here ( https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11525679 ) that the grains will smell quite funky after its soaking period, does anybody else find that their grains smell???

lol WBS smells like grains yes. if its fermenting however, then youve soaked way too long. i soak WBS 24-36 hours with success though.

The grains will smell a little sweet or funky after a long soak in warm weather, they should be ok... when it goes bad, it will smell like barf or garbage.

I see no reason to grow so much nasties in your soak water when you can avoid it

When I was soaking WBS 12 hours was the sweet spot. At about 14 hours it starts to smell sour.

Then I discovered Fooman's prep and haven't soaked since. (First link in my signature)

12-18 here too, but I've never noticed any odd/off smells with wbs? It's so cheap and easy to find if something did smell I'd just dump it and the whole bag outside for the birds. Remember to cover your car first though. Lol.
Maybe it got wet during shipping or storage and soured?

Nah im talking during soak time is when it smells.. grains smell like grains, but I think I soaked for too long like most people mentioned.. I will try a 12 hour soak and see if that helps.
Thanks for the replies all

Yeah that's is what I was referring too. Also do it in an area that stays below high contam rate temps and no direct lighting such as sun coming through a window or heat fluctuations (IE stoves/kitchens). Not that it matters that much but I don't know what you did.

maybe ill try these 'new' techniques for soaking my WBS, but honestly ive had NOTHING but great results with 24 hour soaks and then a nice simmer before steam drying in a strainer.
takes longer, but i like to stick with what i know lol. seems like most here are having great success with the shorter soaks or no soak at all haha. if thats the case, ill have to try them out at the very least. cant knock it till youve tried it i suppose..
