What a mind fuck that book is. I now understand why they called that guy a genius.
All I can say is wow. Completely fucked up but wow. It just leaves you thinking "what if?"
A literary gem. Especially for those with an interest in politics and society. The concepts he brings forth are very well thought up. To a point where you wonder if they are fiction of a possible reality.
10/10
Who read it? What are your thoughts about it?
Be careful what you answer though. Big Brother is watching.

Love all Orwell's stuff. You should read some of his essays as well if you enjoyed it.
1984 was required reading on high school for me, but I re-read it a couple years back.

I thought that the most interesting aspect of the book wasnt the story itself, but the concept of new speak. Slowly changing the language over the course of time in order to have real control over how people think.
It's similar to a slave language in a lot of ways.

Animal Farm was pretty good too, IMO. It's more satirical but it has some gems in it too. It's worth a read, and it's only about 100 pages long if I remember correctly.

I am a big fan of most of Orwells stuff. 1984 is incredible. It's been quite a few years since I read it but I remember most how amazing it was that he was able to predict the technology and use of said technology. Certainly the levels of scrutiny and surveillance he envisioned has been reached today.
I see a lot of parallels between today's efforts to make speech and thought "politically correct" contrasted to the "Newspeak" used in oceana. While I don't condone hate speech, the act of censorship is troubling. Even worse is if you can condition people to self censor. It creates a climate of complacency.
I think my second favorite book by him was Burmese days. A bit less relevant today but nonetheless contains a fair amount of good insight.

Not everybody had the same books in school. I had Agatha Christie's An Then There Were None and a few French literature books. I had to read Anne Frank's diary on my own and 1984 too. At least I read by my own unlike the vast majority of people.

We never read any classical literature in my school. (Cept for Romeo and Juliet).
----- I finished 1984 a couple months ago, straight after Animal Farm. Animal Farm is a must btw, I don't thibj anything depicts society psychology better.
I really enjoyed 1984, it's a book everybody should read. Feels like the road map government's are working towards.

Orwell is my favourite writer of all time. Not necessarily for the content of his work, but for the way his style of writing expresses it.
Fucking absolute legend IMO. Have you read any of his essays? HIGHLY recommended.

I read it 4 or 5 years ago. Its an awesome book, and he crafts it so well it blurs the line between fiction and reality and makes you wonder if we arnt already headed there. We already got spy teles strapped to our hips in the form of smartphones. They spy on everything. They have total control of the media. The wars are clothed in psyops. In a lot of ways it feels like the idea is already being realized in a more naunced and subtle way then whats presented in the book. The story itself is a bit of a caricature of what could happen but right now, at this very moment we're already subjected to a lot of what he covers. Its definitely sobering to think about.

If a rape or murder takes place and the police can get a lead by 'pinpointing all the smart phones' in the vacinity at the time, then why not.
I'ts not all bad. This cunt only got caught because his daughter was dna tested 32 years later.
I wouldn't be surprised if smart phones didn't have a chip installed that could automatically sends the thumprint, of the person most often using it, ie the owner, to a central data base.
By the way, I don't think the the government, or the police give a shit about your life enough to snoop, unless you are implicated in some crime.

I dont give a fuck about a single murder victim. Im not willing to give up my security and privacy for the life of a single person. Its something I dont want, and I dont give a fuck about the appeal to fear. Murders are gonna happen regardless, rapes are gonna happen regardless. You wanna impact their numbers build a better society, dont build up government powers.

They have a straight up metal tree in a mcdonalds parking lot in LA that intercepts cell phone data and transmits it to the government. There were two people at the top repairing it even XD.
There are a lot of these around more populated areas.

That's a bit far-fetched just on the basis that is completely unnecessary in order to intercept or record a phone call or text. Several laws allow then access to that information already, no?

Well adoption of encryption technology has sped up a bit as a result the NSA related leaks. Eventually encryption will be at a point where it's both standards for all communications and uncrackable at the same time.

Thats the whole basis of the stingray device law enforcement deploys. It mimics a cell towers carrier signal and cracks your phone wide open. No warrants required. Theyre starting to get darkly intrusive, and in times of economic hardship I doubt such powers will be used for good. If history is anything to go by.

Unfortunately governments have no reason to abide by laws intended to curb their "martial law" powers, there was a time when governors might be dragged through the streets covered in tar while their houses burned. Those times are past in the West.

I agree that the oligarch's can be touched, in my opinion it is much easier today than ever. Back in the day you would essentially have to ambush them and their badass body guards close range.
The West is too soft now for any of that, we're stuck with what we have until the next World War, plague or famine. If this generation revolted, I would probably side with the government as the lesser of two evils.

He won teacher of the year then bailed to another state because they refused to repeal the book bans in the school.

Dude look at it in raw terms, when they hold those big public meetings what are they primarily protected against? Ballistic weapons. They stand behind bullet proof glass, and they convene in soft buildings. Rockets that only have to fly a mile or so are easy enough to make, and the kinectic energy they aquire during flight would be enough to punch through concrete. Impact fuze with time delay and a practiced shot opens em right up. You're patriotic about the power of your armed forces but a calculated strike can still take out your leaders. Its the fear of action that prevents something like this from happening. 10,000 grand and you could pump out a missile capable of hitting them. It would devastate them.

The military score between the US and UK is clear, past and present.
Canada is a colony and always has been.

You say that like its a bad thing. What did you win with your independence? You're still economically challenged like any other developed country out there. It seems like working together is almost paramount to your success. Something thats lost in the hubris of your patriotism.

* Not patriotic * Don't support this government * Don't believe in democracy or republics
Pointing out the UK's subordinate military history, and the fact that Canada is a colony, doesn't imply anything else.
Not sure what all this about cooperation is, the worlds not changing.
