if you look up any head shops in canada, most sell live cacti right there in the store. small ones about the size of a dime are $20 larger ones cost $80.

Good point... I was thinking of me and an experience I could never have had in Australia. There is a bigger picture here, though and this is an endangered plant.

$80 dollars a button is a ripoff. The cacti take 8 years to mature and you need four to six large buttons for a ceremonial dosage/.
Shi, Indians only charge $4 to $5 a button up from 10 cents a button in the sixties.
And I saw a shop in Amsterdam charge $90.00 for a quarter ounce of dried buttons. That is one clinical dosage of peyote.
One button for $80 is rediculous since it takes four large buttons or more for a high. That means you would be paying #320.00 for a dose. Pharmaceutical mescaline is only $60.00 a gram and that is two to three doses.
Those people are rip-offs.
Mj..And San Pedro is only about $20 a dose or so from many botanical supply shops oin the internet.

Oh yeah! One other thing. There is no such thing as Legal Peyote. It is illegal all over the world except maybe Holland.

It depends on your definition of legal. It's illegal for human consumption, as mescaline is illegal, much over the world, but in places such as Canada peyote is specifically exempted as long as it's not for human consumption.
17. Mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxybenzeneethanamine) and any salt thereof, but not peyote (lophophora)

This sacred plant is a teacher, its not sacred just because its endangered. I would not eat a wild button, but if you grow it yourself, then I do believe its good to eat it.
It is not the same as pedro, it has like 50+ alkaloids that pedro doesnt have, and the only thing wrong with eating it is if your just using it to get high and not using it as a spiritual guide.

to grow your own crop is another thing. but anyways, i don't think i would make use of that too many times in my life and i would rather look for _good_ people to pass my babies to (to give, not to sell).
i didn't say it was sacred because its endangered in its wild habitat.
even because we know there are lots of lophos, probably more outside its native habitat than inside...
the plant sure is meant to be eaten... and sure is not the same as pedro. it's that sometimes newbies get all excited about peyote this and peyote that, other times we see uprooted peyotes from their wild habitat...
know what i'm trying to mean?
i would suggest people to try pedro/torch beforehand, in order to check if this is the kind of experience they seek...
