can someone translate these travel rewards card offers for me?

Here's the offer:

"No annual fee and 20,000 bonus miles", if spending $1000 within 3 months.

Does this mean I can travel 20,000 miles worth of travel by plane or what? Say I go to NYC from LA which is about 2800 miles. Is this how these offers works?

The marketing is tricky because I'm reading that how it works is this: if your travel purchase cost $200, you would multiply that by 100 to determine you need 20,000 miles to redeem.

So in other words, 20,000 miles is really just $200 cash back reward thing? Not 20,000 miles worth of plane flights?

Each airline has their own calculation with respect to how many reward miles are required in exchange for a given ticket.  I recently flew Frontier airlines and it cost 20,000 reward miles each way from Los Angeles to DC.  Frankly, I don't like airline reward programs, the cards often have an annual fee and I'd much rather have a simple cash back rewards program so that I can choose how to spend my rewards, instead of being locked into using them on one specific airline for an airplane ticket.

The Citi DoubleCash Mastercard (2% back on everything) and Costco Citi Visa card (4% back on gas, 3% on restaurants/travel, 2% on Costco purchases, 1% everything else) are the two cards I use most.  I also use a Chase Freedom Visa card that has rotating quarterly 5% reward categories.

This^^  In my experience, I've found that reward miles tend to be obscure in fine print.

You may get an initial offer providing you 20,000 "miles," but you need 100,000 miles for a ticket somewhere. You just have to check the numbers. This is why I went with  a 1% cash back card. It's simple: I get 1% back on everything. Every quarter, there are special categories where I get 5%.

I need the roof on my house done.  It'll be 12k.  Onto the card it goes, I'll get $100 simply for paying with a card versus a check.

good call. the offer I was sent has no annual fee. But I don't like why they would put 20,000 miles to make it sound bigger than it is when it has NOTHING to do with mileage at all! It's nothing but $200.
