WTF WOULD YOU DO SHROOMERY?

The scenario: My significant other and I both work the same decent paying job. We bothe get paid the same day except she gets hers early in the morning via electronics and I get mine as a paper check. When her funds come into her account she automaticly transfers said funds to a seperate more personal account where basically only she can pull them out no company can take anything whether she enrolled to have monthly bills paid through her online debiting account. More or less the money is there for her eyes only once in the personal account.
Last Friday we were on a nightshift and her money came in at say around 330 a.m. She went to deposit her 840$ check like usual into her second account and moved it over like normal except the original account said there was still a balance of 840 in it. Thinking it was just a glitch she repeated this action 8 or so more times until the original account said sorry, there are no knew funds for transfer leaving her with over 12,000$ in the vault. We were a little stunned! We expected a phonecall or to log back in and things be different but nothing has been spent or changed 6 days later...
THE QUESTION OBVIOUSLY IS: What would you honestly do shroomery? I know whats right. Iknow what gets you a pat on the back and into Heaven. JAIL is more than a four letter word though. TIA!

That sounds iffy to begin with... Multimillion dollar software is designed to. Keep stuff like that from happening...
If you're not trolling and being serious... They will catch it and they will make you pay whatever you can't give back along with jail time.

Most of the time it is a computer glitch and with correct itself. But since it's been 6days. I doubt that now. What's odd is those pay cards are PREPAID. So if it kept letting her do it the. It's probaly the PREPAID companies error and not anything to do with the job you work for.
Many people have had this happen and it's always different. Some have taken it to court and gotten to keep the money. Others saved it and they asked for the balance to be returned and was returned Others spent it and had to go to court. Some win and get to keep it. But usually. IF YOU SPEND IT KNOWINGLY THAT ITS NOT YOUR MONEY. Then they won't judge in your favor. I've really never heard of someone going to jail over it tho. Unless they new it was happening repeatedly and kept doing it every pay day. Then you May domjailtime. But honestly it's best you contact your job atleast and try to find out what's going on.

Wonderful response sir! My conscience wont allow me to talk her into keeping the money. I dont think the money is affiliated with the company we work for which hosts more than 5000 workers. THAT being said whats your mailing address? 12000 split down the middle sound good to you? NO Ill do whats right and so will she while we grit our teeth and smile

I don't really see that being bad karma. It's not like he found a wallet and kept it. I know what I would do...I'd wait a little while and invest. I'd probably take 2k out now and pay my rent too.

I called the payroll office and they simply advised me to call the bank and have them sort out the error. I have not called the bank yet. I would love to spend it to catch up on bills but Im still weary of attention it could draw and my conscence is saying yo homie do the the moral thing. Maybe Ill just hold off for a while...

my personal opinion: unless physically robbing someone (i.e. a teller and/or innocent bystanders), taking money from a, presumably large, bank (note: not credit union) is not wrong. you already bailed them out for wrongful practices. you're just getting your chunk back

they will come down on you eventually, the best thing to do is just tell the bank, as cool as it would be to get free money, they will come down on you eventually for sure

Here's what happens in the real world - the moment you use that money to pay bills, and spend a little extra at the store, or end up with a new TV - the company will catch up to you, and either get the money back, or destroy your credit somehow. It's not really your money, so just keep safe for them until they ask for it back.
I always wanted to take a stack of deposit slips to the bank that looked "blank" with account info, but had my account printed in the MICR ink. lol.

Everything besides waiting would be just stupid. If that amount gets lost, obviously the owner has to much of it. Calling someone over this is thus not the moral thing to do, it's rather kicking your luck in the nuts. You can't be punished for just having it sitting around, just don't spend it.

I work for a major bank. I call tell you that for suuuuuurreeeeee it will be noticed and caught. As others have said you can actually sue to keep the money, as the error is on their side and there are some protections in place to protect consumers if the bank is at fault, but I wouldn't spend it because the judge you get assigned might just see you as taking advantage of an obvious situation and side with the bank, which is the most likely outcome in your scenario.

Thank y'all for your responses. So far haven't heard from anybody about it and it hasn't been spent. Were sitting on this money until we either hear something or until we get desperate which shouldn't happen anytime soon...not a peep from the bank yet.

Usually they fix this kind of error in week or so, but don't say anything unless you really want to give the bank 12 grand. Spend only the money that you thought was supposed to be in there (840) just like nothing happened.
Wait until you get a statement from the bank with the 12K printed on it. If it still says 12k after about a month, you're in the clear- drain it with an ATM in cash over a month or so. DO NOT try to make a large purchase with it, as that will likely cause a red flag. Dishonest? Maybe, but then again the likely reason it's there in the first place is not a glitch or error, it's probably dishonesty on the bank's part.
A lot of companies are getting desperate and are padding the books to make them look like they have more money available than they really have, for example that 12K on the books in your account is 120k in lending power to the bank. IMO the whole monetary system, especially fractional reserve banking, is a fraud. A little manna from heaven in your favor should not make you feel guilty.

I'd wait far longer than a month before withdrawing. More than a year, maybe consult a lawyer after that time.

You need to fess up and straighten out this mess. There is less than one out of a thousand chance this is just going to go your way. Straighten it out or there will be someone at a much higher level straightening it out for you. Theirs a slight chance, but bank computer systems are 3 or 4 times backed up. They probably can't do anything to you, but I would just get this over with ASAP. They might have fucked up but these people are not ammeters.
