Monotub slow growth
    #23395510 - 06/29/16 08:59 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I have a monotub that's 14 days in that seems to have slowed down considerably. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated, this is my first monotub.

Using a 1:3 ratio, wbs spawn was mixed with horse manure, coir, vermiculite and gypsum (50/30/15/5 - the substrate stonesun often mentions). Substrate was pasteurized for 90 minutes. At some points the temp just hit 170°F,but no higher (<10 minutes at 170°).

All holes are taped. Lid is on securely, but does not have latches. 12/12 cycle of ambient light. Temperature in room is 68—70°F. Tub has not been opened in 2 weeks, first time was to take the pictures below.

The substrate colonized well the first week, few changes have been observed in the second. If you zoom in on the pictures you can see beads of moisture on the substrate. I followed RR's video on field capacity, but I lack in experience. A couple of cracks have also formed in the substrate, which can be seen in the third picture.

Any ideas on helping it out? Just be patient? Thanks!

Looks stalled as hell. Did you leave grains exposed? No way that mycelium is going any further than it has with the sub dried out and matted like that. I'd start over and toss that outside for fun.

:whathesaid: Since it is so dry, try a casing layer next time. I think that is what cosmo was getting at with the exposed grains.

Any ideas what caused it to dry out so much? Many teks support no casing on cubes, and I followed everything closely. If I was to case, wouldn't I want to wait for full colonization first anyway?

From what I had read, I thought I was suppose to basically leave it alone until colonization was complete.

To answer the question, yes, there were exposed grains :frown: I thought everything should be distributed evenly.

Thanks again for the help!

Maybe you didn't use enough water?

I meant add a top layer of substrate when spawning next time, over the exposed grains. Exposed grains aren't a big deal though if it's evenly mixed and smooth, flat, and level. So it looks like you either left the lid off or didn't use enough water in your sub.

:whathesaid: also, since your lid doesn't latch, try taping it for a better seal next time. That way your sub moisture doesn't evaporate during colonization.

It looks like the substrate wasn't at field capacity and is maybe compacted too.

The sub should be fluffy.

What do you mean by "the lid is secure"? If it's too tight, then it won't get enough GE and that can cause stalling and contamination.

If your substrate is at field capacity, then you don't need a top layer to prevent grains from drying out.

Now that you've taken the lid off, you can give it some more time to see if it colonizes further. There's no reason to give up until you see a contam or you just need the space or tote or something.

Also, your spawn or sub may be contaminated and causing it to stall.

Here is a picture I took after mixing the spawn into the substrate. Does it look dry? (in retrospect it does to my inexperienced eye..)

Spitball, by secure I mean the lid is fully "snapped" close, but it's not the type of container that has actual latches that close over the lid.

Would it make sense to mist to try to add moisture to the sub? If I lose the project so be it, I'll try again, but I don't want to give up until I see contamination or I have more spawn to try again.

That looks very dry. I don't know if it is recoverable or not.....probably not?

Your lid is fine though.

Oh man. to hell with the lid that is really dry for sure. You could try to mist, but it looks really matted and cracked now. It's not colonized enough to dunk either. The bad thing is that you are pushing the limit for time of pasteurized subs to remain a healthy place for mycelium growth. Imo since this your first time.. Try anything and everything to rescue it until it contams or fully stalls. Later on you'll toss something like that in a heartbeat.
