Sorry, I got distracted by shiny things and cannot post here.

Shiny things for my bikes make me practically orgasm when I unwrap them. Yes, a new, uprated, exhaust manifold does this. I am not proud, but it is what it is.

On a deeper note, this is CLEARLY by design right?

I recently built a rear strut tower brace for my car. It is made out of shiny aluminum (aluminium) and sparkles in the sunlight - if my trunk (boot) is open and the sun is on the horizon...

Did you steal that gif from someone's avatar? If not, I may get rid of the cool dog, who I really like.

Reminds me of the ADHD craze, where many people are viewed as defective.

Watch a hamster or a rabbit and then tell me how much focus humans "should" have

Anxiety and restlessness is a highly adaptive trait that's helped our species survive.

most likely accounts for some of the American obsession with sex

as it temporarily seemingly gives the undisciplined mind, training wheels, for the experiencing of concentration ... when distractions are ignored ...

or course once it is over, the undisciplined mind, seems to frequently fall prey to some sort of cell phone hypnosis.

Steve Jobs is seen as a hero by many, but might just as easily be seen as having long term, a rather undesirable influence on modern culture.
Since almost every thing is made in China now and craftsmanship is dying, this perhaps goes unnoticed by many.

Ironically? it is from China that Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung come, which is a more accessible antidote to this malaise, than meditation for many. Hatha yoga (although frequently partly reduced to exercise) may also be a more accessible antidote to this malaise, than meditation for many.

The act of listening...

...is a miracle.

when one listens, there is no comparison, there is no acceptance or rejection,
the very act of listening brings about a total attention...

I've heard it said we are "addicted to distraction".

The mind is constantly scanning - seeking anything to escape the present moment.

I used to repeatedly read the cereal box ingredients as I ate breakfast.

Or ate my meals in front of the TV in a trance-like state.

We can't seem to drive without music or podcasts or using our phone.

Some people complain about silence and stillness... "It drives me crazy!"

We're stimulation junkies

- - - -

There is no greater gift than to give someone our full undivided attention.

So often in conversation we just wait for our turn to speak, without really listening.

Only the most aware, honest and open people I have ever met admit to this.

It is hard, when our minds can work 10x faster than the words others share with us, to remain focused on their words. It takes effort, and focus, much like meditation IMO.

None the less, 99.9% of use seem to do it some degree.

THE DOG STAYS.

OP- I think there have been a few studies done on the decline in attention span. Mostly, the internet seems to take the blame. I think the capacity to immediately flick to something else properly does reduce our capacity to retain information or stay focused on a given thing.

Its not the internets fault. It starts with tv even if you wacth just tv as animals we are drawn to it but the flashing lights of 60 blicks a second. The same with our phones and computers. The real problem is the population ageing and lack of place to send crazys people. We take everyone into our avg when it comes to looking at any different mental issues. About 42 years ago there was a switch form lets put every one with a mental problem to a state run metal hospital and make sure they see the light of day. To the lets keep all them at home and walking around and give them jobs and make them fit with all normal health people. The population of mentally illness is 11% and its always been that nice 11% figure. We just can't lock people up and remove parts of therebrains anymore so the rise of what we precede as mental issues is increased but it hasn't. We don't believe that people should be treated that way because the state needs those resources to take care of the elderly which they didn't use to have. I don't want any of you to believe that people have changed or that its about being a nazi Germany idea ideas cause im plainly looking at the united state's on this one.

This got me thinking about autism/ADHD, and what the evolutionary advantage, if any, they serve.

I must be super evolved then, ya know with being anxious and restless all the time.:twitchy:
