Minimalism
    #23394219 - 06/29/16 01:03 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Anyone going/gone minimal? This has been on my mind for years and I"m finally getting around to it - because I was too buys with a bunch of nonsense, which is the whole point.

Please share tips, tricks, strategies, recipes, mindsets - anything that helped you or may help someone else.

Today I quit my gym membership: Exercise is free, but I also already own a bunch of good equipment.

I'm vowing to quit restaurants: or at least put them into a special occasions category kind of thing. Although I'm improving, I still spend so much fucking money on restaurant food. I'm going to have to - nay, luckily I GET TO learn a bunch of new recipes and such...it will be challenging (good!).

Entertainment: I turned off cable quite a while ago, but I still have internet...it may be hard to let that one go, but if I'm honest with myself, its not a necessity. I buy a lot of books from Amazon, though I know there are other options. I almost never go out out, but I could get this down to zero. I can grow my own mushrooms :mushroom2: for entertainment.

I can ride my bike (I have a fucking badass bike!) to most places of necessity: grocery shopping included because I have a sweet trailer as well. Biking to work is probably out of the question, but I'm going to look at it.

I vow to produce the majority of my own food: I intend to raise chickens and I already have a pretty sweet garden which I will expand in the coming years.

This list is disorganized af. But one of my primary goals is to save over 50% of my income for as long as I have income. The other is enlightenment (sorry about using such a preposterous word, but its an efficient way to express a general idea).

Learn to cook-  This will help you tremendously and makes living without many possessions/money extremely easy.  This is one of the most useful skills in life.  Go vegetarian and make $1.00 meals.

Get rid of the majority of your clothes.  I own like 4 shirts I wear outside of the work environment.  A year ago I bagged up everything I didn't like/barely wore and gave it away.

Dont fucking pay for cable.  Use your computer and get everything for free.

Bike everywhere you can, use public transit when you cant.  Cars are fucking expensive and unnecessary.  Not to mention the fact that they contribute to the pollution of the earth.

Entertainment- read books, create music, listen to music.  Basically, just get in touch with the creative side in you.  Find your medium and CREATE.

If you're tryna save most of your money, then the main tips are learn how to cook, cook vegetarian, and use public transit/bike.  You have to spend some money on entertainment though or life isnt worth living, IMO.  Unless you can get along with just books/home movies.

Learning to cook is a big one. I'll also be growing most of the food I'll be cooking. Gardening and raising chickens for food will be great!

I dont expect I'll be able to completely unplug, though. I'll still want to interact with civilization, but through a drastically altered dynamic.

I save 90% of all my pay checks and usually my fun consists of going to the gym, which I enjoy doing for the natural buzz, and going to music festivals sporadically. The line up has to be phenomenal as far as my musical taste goes - I have to listen to 90% of the artists for a commitment

I never eat out. I prepare all my meals in the morning for a full day.

I believe in quality over quantity too, I'd rather own a few pairs of nice pants and shirts over a stack of low quality shit. So I have minimal clothes but they are high quality and will last longer than rags

Quite simple.

Just sell and give away all your crap, especially the TV. You don't need it, it is tying you down and creating mental noise.

I did it when I was 23. Got rid of everything except 1 guitar and my clothes. Then I moved to a country where I couldn't speak the language. Of course when I got there I couldn't afford much, just an empty room. So I got a low bed and put it in the middle of that empty room and painted the walls white. Since then I have always favoured futons and always put my bed in the middle of the room. No pictures on the walls in my room, no mirrors either. Just clean space perfect for thinking. I haven't plugged in a TV to the antenna or cable since then,(in fact I only just bought one a few years ago, I didn't have one for more than 10 years) if I want to watch a movie I download it and watch it off a USB stick. I download all of my music. I make art and give or throw it away. Apart from my clothes, books and instruments all of my personal possessions now could still fit in a medium bag, it's 15 years since I broke the system in my head. I eat healthy food I cook, my wife is vegan though I enjoy a small portion of meat every now and then.

I swim, walk, fish, make music, make art, cook, enjoy LSD, enjoy studying, enjoy spending time with my children. When my kids leave home I will cull all the clutter again and my whole house will be clearer, until then I will just retreat into my room when I need space.

I think the biggest thing here is disconnecting from the media, once you do that all these other things can come naturally.

edit: that said I now also have camping gear and tools. Essential stuff to be used that I store in the shed, rather than in my space.

I already dont drink and quitting weed has been on my mind for a bit now...

One thing I want to focus on is being patient with getting to a minimalist lifestyle. I dont think I can do everything at once. It'll have to be small steps.

Currently, I'm mapping out exactly how minimalist I want to live - I'm taking inventory of my possessions and lifestyle choices and such to create a game plan for myself.

I've found there's far greater value in knowing how to live without things than forcing a permanent lifestyle of minimalism.

Things can and often will make your life easier. You don't need to hold on to them just because you have them. You don't need to get rid of them just to prove you don't need them. There is a flexibility to balance. Just don't waste them.

To me minimalism is about holding onto things that you believe to be necessary to facilitate living a life of fullness that isn't made full by possessions.

As someone said, there's value to knowing what it's like to be with nothing. I've been there and it's one hell of a test. But it teaches you many things about yourself.

I live in a really rural place. If I didn't have a car, I'd feel trapped and without mobility. I wouldn't want to lose my car. At the same time I did a yard sale not long ago and sold practically everything I owned that was in the garage. It's not needed.

Apart from things like clothes and essential tools like a glass bong, a blender for making tea and smoothies, fridge freezer for keeping food fresh to minimise long trips to the shops, a bed and some reading material oh and a PC + Internet I'm pretty much happy.

I don't see a need to chase after lots of possessions. I'd rather put my time and money into living experiences & creating memories. To me that includes using drugs especially psychedelics, spending time with family, friends, I adore my dog and love music/guitar playing etc.

It isn't about throwing everything away to prove a point.

My Psychedelic experiences:
LSD - 30+ times (2 hits min / max 3 hits) every time.
Shrooms - 4 times (2.5 - 3.5g)
DMT - 5 times (Powerful breakthrough only once)

Life can be one hell of a bitter pill to swallow so I chose acid instead -YeOlde

I agree. My point in seeking a minimalist lifestyle is to be rather than to have.

I dont really have any intention of going completely minimal: I'm going to keep my car and my heating/air conditioning, etc. I have kids, so I'll keep things connected enough that they'll be comfortable (and wont be social outcasts at school).

Its spiritual journey I seek.

But on another note being minimalist does save you toilet paper (Using a Cum rag, Using just one sheet of paper for your ass)

As a much younger person purging yourself of everything is a freeing experience. It's not about making a point but about cutting ties to "the system". Of course we need the system and it needs us, but to at least break away for some time is a very enlightening experience. There's always time to come back to it later if you're young, but then with some understanding and moderation. The division between needs and wants becomes more real.

Instead of chickens, think about runner ducks.  The eggs are every bit as good and ducks are better insectivores so that they end up helping you out a good bit more in the garden.  They don't get broody as often so you don't lose out on the egg laying as often.  Just something to consider.

Consider it, I will - thank you!

Do they need a pond? Will they fly away?

Ive gone minimal too, on my cooking.

i got burnt out on cooking. So much prep and clean up. i got tired of it.

Now i basically eat canned food and convience stores once in awhile. Lots of Chef Boyardee and Cambelles Chunky Soups. Clean up is so easy. All u need is a microwave.

I do cook noodles as well, at home. Make a simple pasta, cooked noodles with lots of canned tomato sauce.

Not the healthiest diet, but i save a lot of money and save a lot of time on avoiding making big messes.

Its pretty sweet. Cleaning up after cooking a big meal is my least favorite chore.

Runner ducks don't fly. You can use a kiddie pond to provide for their needs.  They are an upright duck so they can go through your veggies and pick bugs out without hurting the plants. I have four of them.  2 males, 2 females I get 2 eggs a day, rain or shine AND they are like little comics.  Fun to watch.

I totally feel you on that. Every now and then I go "phoneless". completely ditch the mobile phone and live without one. It's really refreshing.

There's a lot of great things about the "system" we've built in the western world and like you said, it needs us as much as we need it.
