I prefer a minimal lifestyle, makes my mind feel calm to not have it cluttered with to many things.

Instead of chickens, think about runner ducks. The eggs are every bit as good and ducks are better insectivores so that they end up helping you out a good bit more in the garden. They don't get broody as often so you don't lose out on the egg laying as often. Just something to consider.

Consider it, I will - thank you!
Do they need a pond? Will they fly away?

Ive gone minimal too, on my cooking.
i got burnt out on cooking. So much prep and clean up. i got tired of it.
Now i basically eat canned food and convience stores once in awhile. Lots of Chef Boyardee and Cambelles Chunky Soups. Clean up is so easy. All u need is a microwave.
I do cook noodles as well, at home. Make a simple pasta, cooked noodles with lots of canned tomato sauce.
Not the healthiest diet, but i save a lot of money and save a lot of time on avoiding making big messes.
Its pretty sweet. Cleaning up after cooking a big meal is my least favorite chore.

Runner ducks don't fly. You can use a kiddie pond to provide for their needs. They are an upright duck so they can go through your veggies and pick bugs out without hurting the plants. I have four of them. 2 males, 2 females I get 2 eggs a day, rain or shine AND they are like little comics. Fun to watch.

Of course we need the system and it needs us, but to at least break away for some time is a very enlightening experience. There's always time to come back to it later if you're young, but then with some understanding and moderation. The division between needs and wants becomes more real.
I totally feel you on that. Every now and then I go "phoneless". completely ditch the mobile phone and live without one. It's really refreshing.
There's a lot of great things about the "system" we've built in the western world and like you said, it needs us as much as we need it.
