STAR OCEAN

I know I have a tendency to get immensely excited about SNES RPGs, but this one is seriously great and playing it on an actual translated cartridge is fantastic. Seems to be short enough to be worth playing through many times, while having enough variables to make multiple play throughs not just seem arduous. I don't know how good the translation is, since it's just an emulator fan translation put on cartridge, but it seems solid enough and the battle system is a sort of halfway house between Secret of Mana type stuff and full on turn based RPG systems.
Anyone who likes RPGs of that era, get in on this. The graphics are beautiful, the battles are genuinely fun, and while the story isn't as moving as some of the other games of that era, there's enough going on to make it interesting. I'm really glad I bought a repro of this, cause playing it on even the best emulators just doesn't do justice to the graphical subtleties and sound quality that was put into the thing.
Glorious game, in short. Maybe the only turn based (in a unique way I guess) RPG I've ever played that makes grinding levels actually fun.

You mean the repro people? Nintendo could have done it themselves very easily and most of these guys make pitiful amounts of money for what they do.

The fan translation is pretty solid and you should be able to find the ROM. The bits where they did actual voice audio are really shit, but so far there has only been about 20 seconds of that. I'd play it on an emulator rather than a re-release on another console if that's been made. I bought a reproduction, but I have an unhealthy fixation on the SNES and most people wouldn't even notice the differences in graphics and sound between original console and emulator.
I haven't quite worked out the dynamics, but there's some weirdly complex system of personal interactions between characters that makes them change their attitude towards one another, so I suspect this game has about 500 possible outcomes.

Yeah, but it's not really necessary. At least for most models.

What model psp do you have. I may be able to help. 1000 is the easiest to mod but you need to buy a pandora battery. I got mine for $14.

PSPs are for cowards. Anyone who doesn't play SNES games isn't allowed in my threads.
Seriously though, what can a modded PSP do? Play emulator ROM files and stuff?
I know I got all ridiculously over hyped about FF6, but Star Ocean genuinely deserves the excessive praise I've been heaping on it.
Fighting system that's actually fun, glorious graphics, short enough to be worth hella many play throughs, and enough variety in how things play out based on character combinations and stuff.

I just found out they have 150-in-1 NES cartridges that you can just put into your old NES.

Modding a psp allows several things to happen.
By modding the PSP you will be able to install customized firmware and utilize features of the device the common user otherwise could not. It's no secret that by modding the PSP users can install pirated software, in fact, modding is the only way this can be accomplished; You can install emulators. NES, SNES, Genesis, n64, and playstation emulators. You can easily pirate games and add them to the storage card instead of hauling around tons of those psp disks. You can also watch movies though you need a program to convert any movie to psp format.
My psp backlight died last week. I've had it for 4 years. I mainly used it as an mp3 player.
I have a ton of games though which i will miss playing on my psp. I got my model 1000 refurbished for $80
All it takes to mod the psp 1000 is a pandora battery and a 1gig stick to install the custom firmware. Also if you do decide to mod your psp some features must be turned off such as wifi and auto update. If you try to update your psp while it's modded it will brick it.

Fucking hell. Kind of makes sense, I guess. The Japanese NES games are tiny, so there is presumably a shit ton of room inside the US cartridges. Still seems like a hell of a lot if they're real, full length games, though. If you ever bother selling your NES, sell it in Europe. People pay a lot more for NTSC shit over here, and most collectors don't buy PAL crap.
People do really weird stuff with old consoles. Some guy worked out how to watch films on a SNES, although clearly no one would ever want to.
