Overmisting causing mildew smell?

Hey everyone, this is my first grow. I transfered my cakes from the jars into my sgfc about 4 days ago.

I started smelling a mildew-like smell yesterday and it's still there whenever I open the lid to fan and mist. I've had concerns I'm over misting and the answers on the forums I've seen are "Mist when it looks dry or when the vermiculite layer isn't glistening with moisture". Since its my first grow everything looks dry unless I just misted it, and I tend to mist directly on the cakes. (Keep in mind I don't see any pinning yet)

As for the perlite, I'm using normal perlite from home depot. I believe it was the miracle grow type which I've read has nutrients.

So 1st question: Can overmisting cause problem before pinning? I mist 4-5 times a day. Directly on the cakes until I see the vermiculite layer glistening with water.

2nd question: Is there any reason that my sgfc should have an odor when I open the lid? Should I remove all the perlite and replace? (I initially put my sgfc in my bathtub with about 4" of dry perlite and sprayed it with the shower head until it was completely saturated with water)

They look okay so far. Other than that yes overmisting can cause a delayed pinset and aborts. As for the odor did they smell like that when you birthed them? How long did you dunk them after birth? What's your humidity  level in the sgfc most of the time?

Also, move your sgfc away from the wall more and even out your perlite some so there's even FAE. Good job on doing everything else right so far!

No, they smelled nice and fresh when birthed. I did just realize I haven't changed the towel for a few days. That very well could be the source of the smell. Just changed the towel and fanned. Will check in the morning.

As for humidity. I try to keep it 95+ at all times. It'll drop to 80-85 overnight and I heavily mist in the morning.

Also, I dunked for 18 hours after birthing.

So I guess for now this thread is just a misting question until I determine if the towel was the source of the smell.

curious if your spray bottle or water source is the origin of the smell?

Keep us updated! If they smelled okay when you birthed them then I would suggest changing out the perlite to one that doesn't contain fertilizer. That's not going to help anything as it becomes more saturated. I'm sure others have used miracle grow perlite, but I wouldnt imo.

Locallorax has a point, switch to bottled spring water and see if that helps too.
