Casing already has pins after incubation??
    #2339206 - 02/16/04 12:11 AM (13 years, 9 days ago)

My compost casing already has pins on the casing layer after it was taken out of incubation. That mean they started in the incubation chamber. How is this possible? It is HMC with a coir case layer of some golden teachers. Should i just let the pins mature or pull them out? and if i let them mature would that mess up my entire flush? thanks.

i know they are pins, they were in a large incubator for 6 days colonizing the casing layer. They cold have been exposed to light while i was checking to see progress.

checking progress should't be enough light. if its just like two or three then leave them, they might not mature anyway. i dont see this afecting a flush. pick them if your worried just make sure to be stril if you do (gloves, alchohol). leaving them could be a good thing though, you can use them as an indicater that everything is copacetic for the real flush to come.

Pins during incubation happens if too much fresh air is introduced as well. Typically, one can cover the tray or compost with plastic to prevent that trigger.

My casing trays are food trays with a plastic top. so it wasnt exposed to air at all.

Hmmm... I don't know what to tell you. Maybe incubation temperatures fell too low for a period and you didn't know about it.
