Antibacterial agar
    #23389177 - 06/27/16 09:17 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I'm going to be getting some new petri dishes and trying some pre made agar soon.

I've been using pasty plates up until this point but I'd like to have the added effect of an antibacterial element in it as well to help me along and avoid the nasties.

This post is mainly me looking for information and resources to get what I need. Any help is appreciated greatly.

If I posted in the wrong forum any mod can move this thread. It's not something I could personally categorize. Thanks

Word of advice on pre-made solutions. Make sure you know the ingredient percentages first, otherwise you will be wasting time and money. A lot of places that sell it won't list their percentages, which will throw you in a hole of failures if you don't investigate first.

You shouldn't use antibiotic agar unless absolutely necessary. The whole entire point of agar is to make contaminates germinate if present, that way you can transfer away from them and produce a clean culture to inoculate spawn with. If you use antibiotic agar all the time, you'll end up introducing bacterial endospores to your grains and they will contaminate.

:whathesaid:

Antibacterial agar prevents bacteria from germinating on the agar, but does nothing about it germinating on the substrate/grain.  It should be used in the first of like 3 transfers, the other 2 with normal agar, to ensure that it's actually clean.

I'm just going to stick with pasty plates and try to change up my mixture,  thanks for the info guys.

I could see how anti bacterial agar could be an issue.
