I have never heard, even once, that you should mash down on your substrate.  It would become compacted, potentially anaerobic in some spots, and then you'd have some truly disgusting growth on your hands.  I'd love to know where you read that you should do that.  I've only ever done it light and fluffy.  Did you mix the grain and bulk substrate together first or just dump them both in there?

That's a pretty old tek.. So you're using straw then?  I don't know if layering works any better with straw but with every other substrate mixing evenly is where it's at.  But yeah I figured you meant manure or coir substrate at first, I suppose you'd have to pack straw a bit depending on the size/density.

I suppose you could mash it down a bit.  Should produce something either way.

No, it's just not what I usually see people put into a monotub.  A tek involving straw was posted somewhat recently actually: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22512011

It can be used as the base of a substrate, or as a supplement to manure or coir.  I just assumed manure or coir based substrate since you mentioned a monotub for some reason.
