My Koh Sumui cakes are doing something odd... Ideas?

So, this is my first grow and I have been experimenting with a number of "strains" and most all have gone great. Here are the Treasure Coast, Australian, Ecuador and Guatemalans (all on second flush). I've lost track of which is which however.

Here are some Golden Teachers that I am doing with a modified PF approach:

Then there are these... The Koh Sumui:

I'm hoping some of the more gifted mycologist here would be willing to weigh in...
Please and Thank You in Advance!

Are they just Koh Samui, or Koh Samui super strain? If ksss, that short fat look is common.

I believe they are in fact the KSSS. I just thought they looked crowded and almost knurled.
Here are some better close-ups:

Yeah, they look alright.
You have a bit of excess foil under your cakes, especially the big one. You want enough to keep your cake out of the perlite, but not so much that it'll block the airflow through the perlite. Just a thought.

Thanks for the prompt replies! And about the foil, noted. I know airflow is very important, so it makes sense.

You shoulda done the KSSS in your "modified" tek. Strains like KSSS and PE don't perform as well on cakes as they would in a tray or mono tub. For next time. Looking pretty solid though, man.

I was wondering about the trays/large cake too. I tried to spawn into a container like I did the teachers, but it turned bad after a few days. I'm gonna try again soon.

I've had terrible luck with KSSS on BRF cakes. However seeing this thread, my next batch is going to be Koh Samui mono tubs. I just hit 12 jars with Albino A+. So happy to have just inoculated these jars. Wife surprised me and bought me another package of the proper short fat half pints. Time to prep more. Ugh. Takes soooo long.

takes long to prep brf jars? naw.
takes like 30 mins, then PC cycle.
on another note, i just found some of the wide 1/2pints, finally, as well! hopefully i can get a clean plate and make some LI to inoc some before i got to the beach in a week, so they can colonize while im gone.

They look fine, this is how mine looked, short, fat, stubby, and the stems were super dense. This was about a QP - 112 grams dry weight.... Looks like so little, which is what i thought until i picked and dried them, it is now one of my favorite strains.

you must be left handed, then?
i used to grow my right hand for finger-picking, but its too annoying to keep em the right length, and looking not like a crazy person(one hand long one short). so i just cut em all short, now. because it's hard af to fret with long nails, and its still pretty easy to finger pick with short nails.. just use my tips of the fingers instead of the actual nails. gives a slightly different, more mellow sounds, but im not too worried about it haha.. much rather have em all cut.
plsu i use a pick more often than not anyways.

Lol this thread really was the deciding factor in my next set of jars. I just inoculated 15 KSSS jars. I had 6 other strains to choose from, and picked the KSSS. Gonna spawn them to manure/Coir/Verm though.

hahaha. Actually I'm right handed but was asked a few times why I had longer nails on one hand. So I just grew out both hands. They are short enough to fret. I will admit that the thumb is a bit out of control though.

Okay, here is an update.
The larger KS3 cake is colonizing nicely and should come out in the next couple days. I have gotten a couple more decent fruits from the cakes, but have an oddity to report.
Here is the most notable fruit I have on the cakes at the moment:

Now here is the odd part. These are the exact same mushrooms, inoculated at the same time using the same spore syringe:

I had leftover BRF substrate, so I packed it into a small, rectangular rubbermaid container, PC'd it, and inoculated through the lid. The other half of the cake was mixed with substrate to make the 'larger' cake I refereed too.
If anyone has any input/comments/suggestions/questions/snide remarks/insults, please feel free to share.
Thanks!
Addition: I have also flipped the cakes over, upside down. They seem to be performing better...

Yeah, i tried to dab em dry a bit... I was wondering more about why the different shaped cakes are producing such strikingly different fruits. These are the same mushrooms, from the same spore syringe. All of the round, jar cakes are producing the weird little mario brothers fruits. But, the square-ish one producing taller fruit bodies.
