Audio books question

I just downloaded Audible and I'm paying 14.95$ a month for it. Once I download the book, I listen to it on my iPhone.
The thing is. I could get the same book straight from iTunes and avoid Audible right?
Or is Audible cheaper somehow? I've notice that this 14.95 per month gives me a free book even if the book is 40$. It sounds good right? So where's the catch?
Is iTunes competing with this?
Essentially, where do you get your audiobooks?

I don't even use ITunes, nor do I use computer phones, I'm old school. But:
I get my audio books from torrents or elsewhere on the net in the form of PDF files or make them into PDF. All free.
Then run them through this converter, http://www.online-convert.com/ - which churns them out iin the form of raw MP3, surely if you had a hard copy on your computer you could just upload the files to phones like I do or my mp3 player. I even have 20,000 leagues under the sea on there, "Rise of Darth Vader" Hallucinogenic plants, Acid dreams, Steven hawking, all kind of stuff, like hundreds of hours of books. In case I need them, though I prefer actual reading personally though they do have they uses to be sure.
They convert extremely well. Doesn't sound like a drone reading, sounds like an actual person. They pause, they read it perfectly on queue.
That's one way at least. I know of more.

I imagine a lot of people register under the assumption that they will use it, and then don't. That, and I'm sure they are on a model similar to netflix and spotify, where they pay a minimal fee to the publishers for access to their library, at an on usage basis. You're not buying the book, you're accessing it. So that $40 book probably costs them substantially less to let you use it, and for a majority of accounts, they probably don't come too close to exceeding $40 a month in royalties.
Just guessing though. I don't know how their model really works.

Seems like the advantage is a flat rate.
Like when u pay a monthly gym membership, u get to go as much as u want, and its a flat rate.
But if u go once a month, then you are overpaying.
Does my metaphor make sense?
