Guys I really need some help
    #23385330 - 06/26/16 07:41 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys, so I really need some help. I am using a rye grain substrate on quart jars. The mycelium has colonised the whole substrate, my problem is that it will not fall out of the jar as a cake and is stuck. I am trying to fruit the rye grain as a cake, kind of like a BRF cake. I know this is strange, I have heard a lot of people say you should use cassing when using rye grain as a substrate, but this being my first grow I wanted to make it as easy as possible and I have also had people say that you can fruit them as a cake. What should I do ? Should I just leave the mycelium and substrate in the jar and let the shrooms grown from inside the jar ? Is this optimal ? Will it work if I try this ? And how often should I mist the mycelium ? I have heard 6 times a day is optimal...is this okay ?
Any help would be really appreciated, thx

you should break it up and put it into a mono with bucket tek'd CVG. Pretty darn easy, and it'll be better than breaking the glass to make a cake that will dry out too much, because you don't want to case it.
Just sayin'.

I doubt you'll have much success fruiting that as a cake...dankington is giving you great advice. I second it.

Yes unless you had already planned invitro then you might not have the correct GE lids for it to pin. Smack it on a tire and break it up then spawn to a bulk sub mono style or make a sgfc tray. Grains alone will not hold enough moisture to fruit as a cake. You'll need to mix it with something that retains moisture like verm and coir as mentioned above.

Thx for the advice guys, I am going to try growing it as is...hopefully this works, if not I will go for the coco choir and vermiculite mixture on my second grow. I am pretty sure growing it this way should b fine, I have read a lot of forum posts about people who forgot they inoculated jars with rye grain substrates, comeing back a few months later and finding ingrown mushrooms. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I water spray it about 6 times a day, so hopefully that makes up for the loss of moisture. Cheers for the advice guys.

It's called invitro fruiting and is used for grain bags not jars... grain dries out fairly quickly on its own so the flushes suffer from lack of moisture.

2-3 times misting a day is normal...6 is excessive. If it's a mono style grow then it's self humidified

Um....  Did you not just finish saying that invitro fruiting was not done in jars, for some reason?

Case it to prevent drying. Fruit in a sgfc, or gh if you already have one.  I Loosen the lid til pinning,  then fashion a dome or piece of plastic.  Treat it like a bottle sub basically.

Grey, what is sgfc or a gh...I have not heard those terms before. I am misting it about 3-4 times a day, I lifted the lid off the jar and am just making sure it gets enough moisture to grow invitro.

Sgfc = Shotgun fruiting chamber, gh = greenhouse.  They're just fruiting chambers.

If your leaving the lid on you probably shouldn't need to mist so much.  Invitro doesn't usually lose moisture that fast.
