I used to listen to a lot of surf like 10 years ago. Surf coasters are pretty decent. Nebulas were a pretty good band I saw live a few times. I'll try to think of a few more. Dick Dale is king though.

Ironically I'm from Southern California
Beach boys are okay but other then popularity I don't think they were like the American Beatles. Beach Music just isn't my thing, neither is surfing coiencedentially

I don't think Sublime is surf, though sure fans of surf rock are likely in to sublime as well. I love STP but I don't think they qualify either, not a fan of the Chilis so I can't comment.

Someone already mentioned Sublime.
Bands such as 'Slightly Stoopid' and 'The Expendabels' come to mind.
311 is another really good band...they're within the same genre somewhat.
If you heard of all those bands already I can highly reccomend 'Stick Figure'

What exactly is 'surf rock'? I've lived in both Hawaii and Southern California my whole life. Dad was a serious soul surfer. Never really heard to the term 'surf rock' seems like some kook shit tbh.

You're gonna laugh at me but I really enjoyed the animated movie 'Surfs Up' with the penguins.
I think they really nailed the script and capturing the overall culture behind it. Even if it was a bit cliché.

I wouldn't consider Mac surf rock. More like yacht rock he's dope regardless, of course. I don't really consider any of these new "surf" groups to be real surf rock at all. Wavves, etc. It's a completely different sound.

That's not surf rock. Their band name just has "surf" in it, dumbass.

I thought they were going to blow the place up with their tesla coil, lol.
Great live show.
I have always wanted to see them live, seems like they put on really high energy psychedelic shows.
Some places apparently were not down with the tesla coil on stage also lighting the theremin on fire is hilarious.

Frank Black may have been the idea man behind it all, but Joey Santiago was the guy actually playing the surf guitar. Frank's solo albums have some of that sound, but it never was as pronounced as in the Pixies IMO.

Thee pancakes were a good garage/surf band from Greece. Surf music seemed a lot more popular over there. The Mummies are a grungy garage band that I used to enjoy, quite rough though haha.

They had a reunion in the past few years and played some shows for the first time in at least 5-10+ years.
Not sure if they are still at it but I hope to get a chance to see them live at least once before they are gone for good.
Here are some random facts about Man Or Astroman:
They claim to be aliens sent to earth to play surf rock.
Quote:
In 1998 Man or Astro-man? sent a group of "clones" out on the road to tour.[2] The clones had names similar to their original counterparts: Birdstuff became Dorkstuff, Coco became Cocoid, Star Crunch became Chromo Crunch and Dexter X became Dexter Y. This new line-up toured under the name "Man or Astro-man Clone Tour Alpha" and maintained their clone identities while on stage.
Quote:
After the success of the Alpha Project, Man or Astro-man? "cloned" themselves a second time, in 1999, this time using females, who adopted the names Coco Active (Guitarist/Vocalist Shonali Bhowmik), Chromia Staria (Guitarist/Vocalist Deb Davis), Tweety-Tone (Drummer/Vocalist Ani Cordero), and Carol (Guitarist/Vocalist Shannon Wright), and toured nationally under the name "Man or Astro-man? Clone Project Gamma."
