Pressure cooking millet.
    #2338129 - 02/15/04 06:27 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

AFOAF just bought a large pc and is having difficulty with overcooking millet. He is at a high altitude (5500ft) so he is pcing at higher psi (around 18 or 19psi). Is this causing the millet to cook or might it be the fact that he is using hulled millet.
Also if you have a good popcorn recipe for qt jars that would be wicked cool.

Definitely. Hulled millet will cook to a mush.
Also check the water content.

it's the hulled millet. Ive never used it, but I do know that it lacks the main advantage of a whole grain, that being that it can be shaken to speed colonization. HULLED millet is often ground into millet flour and prepared a la pf tek or added whole to brf/verm pf tek jars. Use WBS or popcorn. There are plenty of teks on the shroomery just do a search...

i also have had alot of trouble trying to get hulled millet to work.

anno->can you suggest any good sources for un-hulled millet, online or off.  ive searched froogle, but nothing of substance shows up.  and my local pet stores dont sell straight un-hulled millet, they have that spray crap and mixes.

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

I know this is an old post that I just randomly stumbled across, but you should know that high altitudes don't affect cooking with pressure cookers because a pressure cooker is a closed system and isn't affected in any way by outside atmospheric pressures. That's all.

This is not true, sorry.

The pressure inside a 15 psi PC will be 15 psi higher than the ambient pressure regardless of the elevation. The boiling point of water of 250?F is reached at 15 psi over the ambient pressure(which is also ~15 psi) thus at an absolute pressure of 30 psi. If the ambient pressure is lower due to a high elevation, the absolute pressure will also be lower, thus the boiling temperature will also be lower.

I stand corrected, thank you for clearing that up.
