Any of you ever get "clumps" in your grain prep?

What's up everybody.
I was wondering if anybody else every gets these clumps in their grains when they prep. I've been following RR's grain prep. I rinse about 4-5 times with hot water, soak for 18-24 hours with added liquid coffee and gypsum, and then I bring to a boil for 7-10 minutes to help with steam evaporation. Well every time I do it, I get what appears to be a bunch of sand on the bottom along with clumps of this sand looking stuff and grains. I thought that it could be burst grains, but I see no evidence of bursted grains...unless they are completely turning to mush. Here is a pic, any info would be great.

I get some gypsum and stuff kind of like that at the bottom of my pot after boiling, look like you got a bunch there though. How much did you add? How much grains did you boil?
I always try to pick the clumps out and toss them at the end, I never have near that much though. The grains absorb a lot of it or it sticks to them, I only ever add a small fist full anyway (probably around 4-7 tablespoons, granulated gypsum). I usually boil 7L of grain at a time, sometimes 14. I don't add coffee, I've read it can give an extra nutritional boost to the mushrooms though, just like gypsum. Coffee making things more susceptible to contamination is something that should be taken into account when examining the benefits; this is a known fact. Trichoderma has a huge hankering for coffee, even if you leave a little bit in a cup on the counter for a few days.

From my understanding. It is very contam prone if you add coffee grounds to your substrate, but more contam resistant to add liquid coffee to the soak. I added maybe a 1/2 cup. I didn't mean to add that much though. I mixed up my teks, was going off of memory lol. But even before this, I still had a bunch at the bottom with adding next to nothing as far as gypsum.

I would say you need to rinse your grains off more and add a little less gypsum. These are the only things I can see contributing to the clumping/buildup. They don't seem to be overcooked judging by your picture and description of prep.

That's clumped up gypsum....you used to much.
RR "noted" what he said was a "suspected" increase in the colonization time of the mycelium and said he suspected it had to do with the caffeine...
It is more then likely the ratios Rr provided kept the rye jars at optimum p.h for mycelium development...that's the magic to the forumla.

Damn, thread jacked! Yeah, it was a quite a bit of gypsum, but all other times I followed the tek to the "T". I rinse until the water comes off completely clear and then repeat it a couple of times. Another issue could be that my gypsum isn't fine or powdered, more that tiny tiny pebbles. I managed to get the clumps taken out. The extra gypsum shouldn't pose any issues though should it?

No, a little bit shouldn't cause any issues.
Take following TEKs with a grain of salt. Variables can change a lot in this hobbie, it is best to find the sweet spots for yourself. You'll get the hang of it with time if you keep at it.
Sounds like you are good to go.
