Papaver somniferum (poppy) varieties, varying leaf shape/ flower color..
    #23381067 - 06/25/16 02:57 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

A couple months ago or so I planted a few different varieties of grocery store poppy seeds I had saved up. Really I just tossed a few handfuls of seed in dirt and neglected the area til today  Seeds were from all over the globe (Poland, india, spain)

So I have some plants growing that don't have the type of leaves Im used to seeing on poppies.  They may in fact not be poppies but they seem to (in my inexperienced eyes) have the basic anatomy of a poppy plant, just with different leaves.  Here's a few pics, maybe someone can shed some light on this for me.  (The first image is what I'm familiar with seeing as far as leaves, the other two are a mystery)

Also what's up with these black dots on the stem?  It doesnt appear to be dried latex, far as I can tell.  I'll try to take a better pic.

Sad looking little guy :/

Strange that the light green/blue color is only on the top leaves

Notice the black dots on the stem?  I think its maybe some bacteria or fungus, maybe caused by an animal...  It's almost like someone made the black dots using a sharpie.

Yellow flowers?

Weird leaf shape but i believe it to be a poppy.

Some youngins growing, funny thing is all the plants above started out looking pretty much like that when young.

Not sure what this one is, Im leaning towards it not being a poppy.  If I could id all these it'd make weeding the area easier.

It's not poppy. They will be glaucous green in colour and a lettuce like rosette form as seedlings with serrated edges, and they will stretch in height before they flower.

I don't think any of those are poppies, I'm like 90% sure

After looking at your photos, I can identify one of your plants as an edible weed.

I am quite sure as to its identity. I have it growing in my yard as a weed, and my mother used to weed them from her garden when I was young, and cook them like spinach for dinners. There is some variation from location to location and even a variety that has a purple-ish cast to the top tips (purple blush)-lambs quarters. Another thing this plant does, is on the undersides of the leaves there is a powdery silicate accumulation, (my hunch, is that the plant does this to help deter cabbage moths and other bugs from laying eggs on and eating the plant, as it is quite tasty).

I am fairly certain 99% it is: Chenopodium album
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chenopodium_album

It is related to several other delicious garden weeds / vegetable grains.

Blitum capitatum / Chenopodium capitatum / "strawberry-beet-berry" or "spinach-berry".

and another relative some people know as a superfood, (Quinoa)/ Chenopodium quinoa.

(The thing that all 3 varieties have that gives them away. . is the leaf shape, - arrow shaped leaves on all 3).

enjoy, ..

Miss - K
