I've been looking online for some fine grade vermiculite. I found some professional grade vermiculite on mycosupply. I can't seem to find the difference between fine and professional grade...?

I've never found anything locally except fine. Don't even think any of them say fine. But it's like pouring dusty grains of sugar... Very fine. Feel like my cakes would be less dense and perform better if I had some larger grain Verm.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

horticultural vermiculite is available in four sizes, from 1, which is the coarsest, to 4, which is the finest. Sometimes, the grades are labeled Large (Grade 1), Medium (Grade 2), Fine (Grade 3) and Super Fine (Grade 4). Particle sizes range from 5/16 inch for Grade 1 to 0.04 inch for Grade 4. Vermiculite may expand up to 20 times its original size and hold water from 220 to 325 percent of its weight, depending on grade.
Coarse grades are recommended for PF and all other substrate mixes. So you would want grade 1 or 2. Using fine grade very is not recommended for PF tek because it compacts too much and doesn't provide the mycelium growth room to expand and connect.

However, I like the finer grade myself for using in my casing layer mix and actually to mix in my substrate too.
To each their own I guess.

I fully agree finer grades can be used for top layers, casings, bulk subs ect. Just a big pain in the ass when making cakes. They will sink down and compact when you PC them with fine grade verm. The only reason I stick with coarse or medium grade for casings and such is because it's easier to clean off of the fruits later.

Thanks for the input guys. RR said fine grade has better water retention than more coarser grades, I may buy the the professional grade and see if it's fine...

Yes go for it! If you have coir in your bulk then it will provide enough fluff in the sub to keep it from matting down.

no one told my mushrooms they wanted coarse verm in the CVG size of dust/sugar sounds a bit too fine tho unless you're exaggerating.
"pro grade" sounds like a sales pitch to get your money. "prof. made for mushrooms"
