I've Got THe Hot, Hard Cock About Fukushima--and other things from my new job.

So I started my new job here in La Jolla, working on instrumentation for Nuclear reactors for the power industry.
It's hard as fuck--the Eng. Manager said it will take me until February to learn everything I need. He also explained Fukushima.
Sorry folks, no conspiracy, no failure of critical systems. It was human error. The core of the reactor could have been saved--in the event the safety features in the core wouldn't scram and shut down the reaction, you simply pump seawater into the core which moderates the neutron flux so that the self-sustaining reaction stops and the core begins cooling.
This requires pumps--which where there and functional. It also requires electrical power--Fukushima had emergency generators to supply electrical power for this contingency.
Some fucking genius placed the generators in a low lying area that was vulnerable to flooding. A back up plan was not in place--simply fly in generators on helicopters, pump water into the core, and the core is saved.
Simple human error because someone didn't think.
After my training, I may get to go to Shandong Province in China and witness the Shidao Bay Nuclear reactor come online.
Shidao bay is a fourth generation nuclear reactor with 10 210mw generators, each powered by two reactors. It also has 2 1500MW reactors that are experimental. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shidao_Bay_Nuclear_Power_Plant
Also the first nuclear generating station in 30 years will be coming online in the US.
Pretty cool job, but it is stressful. If you think the government sticks their nose into things they shouldn't, you should try nuclear power. They get so far up your ass with a microscope its coming out of your mouth. Safety is paramount.
By the way, France is 75% nuclear, and no problems. This is the future of energy in the world--not some fucking green pipe-dream.

Glad you are excited to start in the industry. Been working as an engineer at a two unit PWR site for about 5 years now. Overall the job is pretty easy. Biggest pain in the ass is dealing with the NRC

Complete and utter incompetence on the part of the workers. From what I remember from the documentary they deliberatly disengaged one of the failsafes because they misinterpreted the reading. Some type of blow off tank or some shit. They were worried about irradiating the neighbourhood so they held off on it. Sparking the disaster.

Yeah, PB is kind of cool but I hang out in Hillcrest or Balboa park more. As for the job, we even have little fission chambers at work that have uranium oxide in them so we can calibrate our instruments.
Mainly we are designing neutron flux detectors that go into the core of the reactor, like 4 of them in one core. That way you can tell if the reactor has a 'hot' spot from something like a faulty control or fuel rod, etc.
This is one area of engineering I never worked in, but I got hired because its hard as fuck to find engineers who can design analog--everyone in college is doing programming and computer stuff now.

Are you a power systems engineer? And right about the NRC--I've spent a lot of time just finding out how they ream you a new asshole if you miss something.

Yes. Instrumentation, etc, that is strictly analogue with NO digital at all. God damn there is a huge shortage in the US. Also power systems EE's.

so it's a matter of a digitally based tool not being able to get the job done? Where does this occur? Sensors I'm guessing?
I'm not super familiar with nuclear but I find it curious that analog based design in engineering is both in short supply and still demanded. I'm a software dude, so it's not my domain, but I've spoken with a few nukes cause the source fascinates me.

Mechanical design engineer. Funny I was just working on a mod for the tubes they use to shove the flux mapping sensors up. I don't understand how it works all that well though.

Yeah there are lots of mechanical engineers in my office. The neutron flux detectors are a concentrical capacitor coated with uranium oxide on the outside. (Uranium oxide is fissile) So when fissile material (mostly odd isotopes of the actinide series metals, esp. thorium and uranium) fission, some neutrons are absorbed in the control rods, some 'leak' some absorbed in water, which is also a moderator, and some strike the detector surface causing another fission; this causes current to flow out of the detector which can be calibrated to measure the reaction rate.
But the power industry, I believe, runs the online reactors at 100%, and handles changes in load with hyrdo, gas fired plants, etc., so the key is to measure a change, which signifies problems. I'm not sure about how the detectors are placed inside the containment.

Good to know there's fellow nuke workers here, I've always wondered.
Hey starfire, are the chinese nukes AP1000 reactors? I'm working on the new ones in US and I'm curious about how smooth start up will go.
