You should and post back! Thanks for reading.

I make my own kombucha, but my scobys are kinda just sitting around. I'll dedicate a batch and make some fizz!

I dont have a kombucha scoby, I only keep tibicos grains for convenience's sake. you should definitely do a kombucha ferment and see how it goes.

I have never used  tibicos grains b4, do they dissolve completely and if not can you reuse them?

Oh no. They dont dissolve. They multiply and they can virtually live FOREVER with lots of care. I constantly give them away. That pic in the original post of my grains is around 2 years old now. I only keep around 2 tablespoon at a time. Any excess are given away...

They multiply faster when you ferment for only 2 days or less for the 1st fermentation, you replenish the sugar water solution and so on... My specific culture ferment fast but dont multiply easily, because of too much strain I put up with them before, I used to leave them for 2 weeks for a couple of cycles... I like it that way though, I wont have much use for too much grains anyway.. as long as they can ferment and look healthy, Im ok with it.

The longer you ferment, you run the risk of starving the grains, they weaken and thats the time they dissolve. If you can find the right groups online, they share tibicos grains - you only pay for postage.

I've at least read about people doing this with purchased cheese cultures, you should be able to grow any live culture out if done right. Just gotta do a little sterile procedure or something of the like.

If I understand your tek correctly I can do this with any alcoholic brewing project? Odd that spore germination/attached bacteria don't mess up the brew?

You can keep a wine yeast culture going for as long as you would want i imagine though the effort involved would make it only really suitable to a specific purpose.
Most wineries here will use the yeast on a needs basis, mostly from freeze dried stock but I do know of a few that keep a culture through vintage feeding it with fresh juice.

New reader here, I love the idea, and my GF really loves making waterkefir. I really love drinking it

I don't do shrooms that often anymore, but do find it a highly interesting ROA, with all the probiotic goodness in there.

Since I only trip about once a year, if I'd be doing this, I'd be pasteurizing, even though live tastes SOOOO much better (regular live waterkefir vs pasteurized I mean).

I do have a couple questions, pertaining more to the kefir culture.

In light of  the previous questions about yeast, can you also plate out kefir on agar?

Last time we had tibicos grains (this time around we have some sort of liquid form of kefir apparently?!?) they started going a bit brownish after a while (they started out whitish), and the taste was also growing worse and worse every time, so we eventually got rid of the culture. Is it necessary/possible/recommended/beneficial to grow the culture out in the fridge in sterilized liquids if you want to keep it healthy for years? I mean alongside the normal fermenting of sugarwaters, as a starter, so not to drink it.

The liquid form my GF has now could apparently also be transferred to new bottles of sugarwater, to ferment the next batch. Any idea on how long this can go on in "kitchen area cleanliness" without getting unwanted shit in there?

And finally, do you happen to know if I can grow tibicos grains from the liquid form?

Thanks for this write up!

you know.. I was thinking the same thing about plating water kefir but havent really tried doing it...

maybe this year..

my culture included in the pic, I think is not that healthy or robust but theyre very much alive and fizzing so it doesnt matter for me.. Ive seen fat grains before, they behave like that way before.. you just have to culture every 2 days.. sometimes I forget mine so they go for 4 or over 4 days so they crumble, I think it just means more surface area... you just use purified or filtered water.. best would be spring water.. they dont like alkaline and distilled water.  ive been keeping the same culture for over 2 yrs.. when they multiply, I just give all the surplus grains away...

water kefir grains are immortal.. they could go oni with their lives indefinitely.

from what ive heard, you cant grow tibicoa grains in liquid form... but maybe if you got tiny crystalline grains in the liquid, maybe theu can grow out as big tibicos grains..

They might be immortal, but they are also susceptible to other organisms, meaning if you don't watch it, eventually you'll culture out some nasty stuff in your "healthy" lemonade. I've tasted it going increasingly worse every batch. I think I first noticed it about 10 batches before we chugged it. But then it was only very faint. By the time we threw it out, we sipped a fresh glass, looked at each other, and were like "No... that's going out."

from what i heard, grains can be recovered... you just have to follow strict guidelines like never going more than 2 days fermenting, taking note of the water source and how they react to it, adding a pinch of sodium bicarb or natural sea salt, using least processed sugar like muscovado sugar..

I have a very severe acid reflux and hyperacidity, its the WORST, and I cured myself using water kefir. .

Great tek! I did something similar with fly agaric and apples, to make fly agaric and apple cider vinegar. I used wild yeasts collected from the air (just leave apple peel out on a plate for a couple of weeks). It eventually becomes vinegar, so you don't have to store it in the fridge.

I just microdose it and it makes you feel so alive.

hate to post just to nitpick, but aren't their wild yeasts found in the apples/peels themselves? When I made cider/plum wine this way I didn't need to let it sit out for a couple weeks, seems like that'd just risk introducing contaminants. Although, vinegar seems pretty foolproof when you leave applestuff open, I've found forgotten apple products that should've spoiled/rotted before but they just became vinegar. But still, perhaps a less pure vinegar than if you sealed off the apple peels in a vessel. anyways, i'm just bored

I post in the name of learning, not nitpicking, I swear..
