Myc or contam? (pics)

Hi guys
I have a small spot and what appears to be some whitening on the lower half-ish of this jar.
Pic is from only 2.5 days or so after inoc and this spot is a bit left (looking straight on) of the inoculation site.
Can anyone tell if this is mycelium or some kind of contamination?
Thank you very much and have a happy Friday!
(this is also posted in the contamination forum, pardon my noobness if this is a no no)

i always have a hard time telling on BRF jars since ive never used that mixture myself. always grains or seeds. anyway.. doesnt look like most myc i see in my jars. its too thick imo. leave it and see how it grows. if it takes off like a rocket and becomes a HUGE circle, id say DEFINITE contam.
otherwise wait for someone more experienced than myself to reply, but just let it grow. it might be just fine
good luck!

it's awfully low on the jar to be from inoc, unless you had super long needles, but with the pic being kinda unclear, it's hard to say for sure. 2.5 days after inoc is also pretty fast for germination, but not unheard of. can you get a better pic? maybe sit the jar down and prop your arms on the table to take the pic.

Thanks MycoL, I'm keeping it for a while if for no other reason than to learn and gain experience with the universe.
It doesnt seem to have grown at all since I first laid eyes on it...could it be a brf clump? Is that a thing?

I certainly can but it'll have to be after work...
The placement of it perplexes me as well. Its lower and off center from where the needle was. A couple of jars got over squirted, but still...
Also, I actually noticed this spot 24 hours after inoc. Which makes it seem even less likely that its myc. The pic was taken 60 or so hours after inoc.

I agree that looks contaminated. Pf jars can be tricky sometimes, it's been many years since I've messed with them too. I do remember having some that would get spots like that. Brf can clump up sometimes and hold moisture in the clump, which usually turns to contams fast.

What happened to the ones you remember like that?
If its a clump, would it be a serious blunder to open the jar and try to break it up?
I'm looking at some google pics of brf and it also looks quite parmesan chesse-ish...hmm...

If the rest of the jar reaches 100% I would cut that spot out with a sterile scalpel. When it happened to me I saw more contams hidden underneath the clump. Obviously don't spawn it with the other cakes to be safe. You could fruit it isolated or just toss it to be extra cautious.

OP,you should wait and then you'll see clearly is it contamination or mushroom myc. But imo it's mycelium.

generally it is advised against cutting a contam out of a cake. think about it, it most likely wont get rid of it, since there will likely be some either missed or unseen or something, and will just make it spread more since you are disturbing it, making microscopic spores/etc go everywhere else. so if it contams, your best bet is to toss it, and not let it ruin anything else.

Does Spawn = birth to fruiting chamber?
If I fruit it separately, do you have any recommendations/links/ideas for putting it outside to grow? My area has what I believe to be good fruiting conditions this time of year...
I've also read a bunch of stuff about eating fruits from contaminated cakes - seems like the basic idea boiled down to "if the fruits look good then eat 'em"...I'll make that decision down the road, and thats a whole other thread...

I wont be doing any surgical procedures with this one lol. As a beginner with plenty of other jars I'd prefer to look into "planting" this one outside or some other zero maintenance experiment...
Also, is there any risk of harm in letting it grow a little bit to learn? To see what happens for educational purposes? Contams cant get through glass, right?

yes that is what spawning/fruiting/birthing mean, but i would seriously suggest just throwing contam'd cakes out. bury them outside, and they can still fruit.

Oh I'm in the favor of always tossing it if there's any uncertainty. Depending on how much spawn you have to work with is why I mentioned a rescue operation. It's safer to start over either way, since there is no guarantee how deep the contam is. Regardless I would leave it be for a while and don't handle it until you can tell. Open it only outside if it's contamed.

How deep ought I bury it? Near or far from an existing garden? What sort of area/soil ought I seek for planting it?

Lets say this particular jar ends up producing mycelium that looks completely normal. Should I still keep it separated?
Is that what you meant when you cut yours open?

if it has a contam and you still want to watch it grow. quarantine it far away from your other jars to be safe. best bet is to take it outside and toss it.
personally i toss all contaminated jars in a single spot about 100 yards into the woods in my backyard. all my good substrate that has finished goes into a spot right near the edge of my woods.

like 6in is deep enough. try to find dirt that isnt too thick/dense/hard.
like Cosmo said, dont toss it yet, wait and see what it does. it could be that since you squirted so much spore solution, that it just dripped down that far, and decided to germinate there. it might be fine. but watching it's behavior and growth will give you some indication. as well as the smell at birth time. of course, if it turns any colors(besides bruising) then youll know it's contam or bacterial.
good luck!
