2 quick questions

First grow attempt...
1. Seemingly, the less important question: why label the jars? Everything I've read says to label the lids with date, strain...I'm doing jars and they're all the same...
2. 24 hours after inoculation, I see a very small white growth in a single jar at one of the inoculation spots. Its not exactly bright white...more like a Parmesan cheese looking spot (no pics). I'm taking this as a bad sign. Any advice?
(I'll take a pic or two, but it'll have to be later this evening...)
Thank you for any help!

No one can tell for sure without pics. Even with pics it can be hard when growth is still very small. I can tell you one thing though, if you inoculated with spores and you have growth in 24 hours, it is probably not mushroom mycelium. The fastest spore germination I've had on agar (which is faster than grains) is 48 hours.
You should always label your jars. The date will tell you how long they have been in colonization, jars taking long can be a sign for bacterial contam. Even if you are only growing one variety, it is nice to know which is which. For example, say that you have a bunch of clones which you are going to grow and compare, if you didn't label them, you won't know which are the ones that are doing best so you can't know which of your copies you should use. If you are just growing for the shrooms and have no interest in agar whatsoever, then you can get away with just a date of inoculation.
I would still label them though. It's good practice for when you decide to get serious and it doesn't take more than a couple of seconds to label a jar. If you are too lazy to label your jars, cultivation is not for you IMO.

Thank you, Supa. Thats exactly what I was thinking. Its my first grow and I definitely squirted too much in the first few jars...but 24 hours seems way faster than anything I've read. I'll give it enough time to post a couple of pics on here, but in my mind I'm already down one jar

Less is more when using spore syringes. 1cc per jar is about the max I would go. If doing cakes, I would split 1cc between the 4 holes in each jar. With grains, I would probably use less anyway.
I've never used spores on jars unless it was to see if I get germination, agar really is the safest way to go.

After a handful of jars I was able to tighten up my squirts. The syringes came with labels covering the 8 through 10 measurement lines, so I couldnt see the fluid level at the beginning.
I've intentionally avoided reading anything other than PF Tek for jars to keep my mind from spinning too much, but before my next attempt I'm definitely going to read through a number of alternate methods.
Do you know of any list that contains all methods of cultivation, from which I could google or otherwise research the details of the process? I see countless terms floating around all over the place and I dont know where they fit or how they relate to one another...like PF Tek, Agar Tek, Chinese food Tek, etc...

Here's one. It's still under construction but it has a lot of links in it as it is. Don't be put off by agar being in the "intermediate" difficulty section. IMO, pasty's tek should be in the begginer section. If you can't keep a pasty plate clean, chances are you will not be able to keep jars clean as well. Personally, I would leave pour teks under "intermediate" and move no-pour teks under "begginer". You should take a look at the tek in my sig if you are interested in a pour tek that uses a see-through container.
For now, all you need to read about is monotubs, grain spawn, agar and bulk substrates. I would recommend casing as well but that is usually shown in bulk spawning teks and it's not really a requirement for cubes, just very beneficial.
Once you start playing with clones, culture work and isolates, you should take a look at slant teks and stuff. I recommend that you start reading about this stuff now, well before you actually decide to use those teks. That way, you will have a pretty good idea of all the variations you can use as well as choose the tek that seems easiest for you. Knowing is half the battle.

personally i label my jars because i always have more than one strain and i dont want to lose track of which is which. lately ive just been labeling a piece of paper with inoculation dates and strains and the location ive placed them in. its actually much easier this way imo.
as for the growth.. i have no idea. i wait 10 days before i even look at my jars (;

if i was simply using spores from a syringe i may not label anything at all, but when i'm using cultures it tells me everything i want to know so labeling is almost key to moving myself into a place where i can get good steady numbers.

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn I'm tired do me a favor
